Finally got my 1988 xjs v12 to its new home and was wondering what book or manual would be best to try to trouble shoot it not running? I'm sure Hanes makes one but would like one a little more detailed. I've seem a few online but don't wanna drop $90 on a possibly not so helpful book. Thanks guys and gals.

I have a Haynes book and it is not too bad. It was given to me, and that makes it even better. Did you download Kirby Palm's book? you should.

I've downloaded the kirbys xjs book and searched the Haynes website for 1988 xjs and nothing came up. I like kirbys xjs book but would like something with photos if at all possible; I'm very new to Jaguars. Im sure there's a lot I need to look into, tools etc. just trying to gather info before putting a battery in it and trying to get somewhat familiar with the motor.

On the Jag-lovers site is an area that is a sort of companion for Kirby's book with lots of pictures.
Otherwise than Haynes, there is nothing except the factory manuals. If you get the JTP1007 Original Technical Publications DVD, it has the factory workshop manual, parts manual, owners manuals, technical bulletins, basically, everything EXCEPT the latest version of the ROM. The ROM is still available in print format. The DVD says it has the ROM, but it isn't the latest version. The security on the DVD is a PITA, but the content is worth the money. I got my copy of the DVD from Coventry West, but others sell it also.
There is also a lot of data, tech bulletins, etc. in the stickies at the top of this forum.
For tools, read Kirby's book. There is a whole section on what you need. Bottom line, you need a complete set of metric and SAE tools, a couple of Whitworth wrenches, and Pozidrive screwdrivers. There are NO Phillips head screws on the XJS, just Pozidrive fasteners. They look like Phillips, but Phillips screwdrivers will round things out. Get the Pozidrive drivers. They are in a lot of Harbor Freight bit sets in sizes 1,2,&3. You can get #4 bits from Amazon. You can also get Pozidrive screwdrivers sets from Amazon.
Even though Kirbys book is mostly text, you will find something on almost anything that goes wrong with the XJS. Yeah, its 700 pages, but it is worth a read.
