Does anyone know what thickness sheet metal I need to buy to perform Chassis repairs, & bodywork?
I'm replacing the inner wing sections behind/below the shock mount - looks like 3mm thick steel may be best as this area is double thickness?
Other chassis rail sections look about 1.5mm.
Not sure about the Bodywork - maybe 1mm - does that sound right?
Unfortunately I don't have a metal stockist local to compare sizes, so will be ordering it all online, & although I don't need much the cost soon adds up.
Hello from across the pond. I don't know how this translates, but in the US the exterior sheet metal is 20 ga. the inner (unibody) structure is typically stamped 20 or 18 ga, depending on if it's a structural member or basic support. Most cold-rolled steel will substitute the original panels well... practice up on your MIG welding skills! these thin gauge metals warp easily with excessive heat.
Panels are 0.9mm, I made a visit to my local Chrysler restorer who let me scavenge through his bin for appropriately sized bits.
I practiced on a lot of small scraps before welding on the car. I found welding panel steel I used full power on the MIG and stitched the metal quickly, not putting too much heat in one spot, or the metal will buckle.
