Slick!

And, I do respect the size of the task. I swapped out more than a couple in my lump before I found and fixed the root causes. Not easy on my lump, but compared to what you faced, a 'walk in the park".

My lump sports a smaller and lighter GR unit. New of Malaysian origin. fingers crossed, so far, so good.

They are big and tough, so, you should be good "for the rest of the way"!!!

Awesome Post! I'm running into the same problem. My old starter is a Marelli dated late '91 for a '92 V12. The Lucas steel starter is twice as heavy and is not going to fit.
Options:
1) Rebuild old starter
2)Exchange rebuilt Lucas for a rebuilt Marelli?
3) other options?

I would stay with the Marelli if you can, the smaller starter is much easier to fit as space is limited.

The Marelli is a gear reduction type starter so takes less power to turn that the Lucas.

Old is alum body with steel and copper core. It is almost half the weight of the rebuilt Lucas!
