XJS V12 Noob Advice
#21
Good call. In my opinion not because of the A/C because an A/C can fail in any new reliable car. But the whole situation with the broken cosmetics and inoperative switches tells me this car has not been taken care of. Broken cosmetics and switches are the easiest thing to take care of, and if they couldn’t even take care of that, I doubt the engine and maintenance schedule has been taken care of which is more challenging
……I see so many xjs’s with one third of my mileage (mine is 118k) that look like hell. I changed the switches in my car not because they where inoperative, but because the letters where faded and it looked ghastly to me. My engine looks like it has 10k miles and not 118k. Most guys in this forum are the same as me. Try to find a car like that.
good luck

The 6.0 engined models do have an additional set of hurdles - a good deal of "unique" parts to this car are hard to come by. The AC compressor seems to be one of those parts that are NLA. I'm sure someone can take a common compressor and make it work, but my understanding is that it's not something most people will be able to do themselves.
There are other parts unique and difficult to come across, so beware. The 5.3 engined XJS seem to avoid this issue. The 6 cylinder models also avoid this trap....except for the supercharged engines, which no XJS had from the factory, but seldom come up.

An "enthusiast owned" car is a typically a good way to go. The seller will gladly (and proudly) describe (and show proof of) all the work he has done and all the money spent....usually buckets full.
And the buyer usually gets a bargain....as the seller has often spent more than he can recoup out of the car. It's a sickness
When I sold my first Jag (1987 XJ6) I gave the buyer all the receipts with the proviso that, if he tallied them up, he would never reveal to me how much I spent. I didn't want to know. He got a helluva car. It had 145k miles but "everything had been done". Two days after purchase he took it on a 6500 mile road trip and had nary a single problem.
Cheers

I would take a higher mileage car that looks like it has 5k on it versus the low mileage car that looks like it has 500k miles on it. And the reason I emphasize cosmetics is because it’s so remotely unlikely that a guy is spending 1500 dollars on a new top or new leather seats or refurbishing his rims if his car is severely overheating and he doesn’t do oil changes but once every 6 years. One always follows the other.

Championship Class, not Driven Class.
The effort and expense in that accomplishment was......significant.
