With the 4.2L, I think its a fix it when there is a problem.

My Porsche 944 has the water pump driven off the timing belt and not an accessory belt. The reason for changing the water pump every few years as a preventive measure is that seized water pump bearings/pully can create issues where a valve and piston collide in your motor.

In the XK, it is has been a matter of a leaking water pump that gets replaced rather than being worried about bearing seize.

When I look at carfax's on 5.0L super charged AJV8's in both XJ supercharged and XKR's, I find 2010 water pumps generally didn't make it past 45,000 miles. The water pump design kept getting updates, and by 2012-2013 I stop seeing this 45,000 mile water pump replacement as a trend.

One heavily driven xj supercharged I saw a water pump at 45,000, 90,000, and was still using the one with 90,000 at a 156,000 miles. Must be the third pump was a better design and went the extra distance. On account of how fast it was gaining miles, the second water pump must of still been the original design hence the second failure 45,000 miles later.

To say no one's had problems would be reckless, but failed water pumps are not common on the 4.2L N/A or S/C. Same engines are used in the X200's from 03 to 08 and in the X350 to 09. Not a common failure point.

The first job I had done on my new '10 XKR was the water pump. Although it wasn't leaking my mechanic could waggle the shaft and I could hear a dull knocking noise occasionally from the engine. My car has only done 17,000 miles!

Just fixed the glove box dampener today. Heard of that one yet? How about the ghost passenger? Seatbelt warning and chime with no one in the passenger seat. The A/C thing? My floor has been dry since I bought the car. If it gets wet I'll do that patch Hawaii documented in this forum that seems to work fine. Of course last week the check engine light came on...excuse me, malfunction indicator lamp. Code P0442, minor EVAP leak. I'll let you know when I find out what it turns out to be.

Hey You in Hawaii ,that’s my home land , anyway I have jag xkr 2010 , I live in the desert then moved to Florida for a bit and guess what the humidity made my dash leather peal , let me know if you get that being in the humidity ?? You have a different year but I’m going to post in a little while all the things I’ve encountered owning this car , though at the end of the day I’d rather put money into a beautiful fast car then an average piece of poo car

I think it's the heat, rather than the humidity, that causes the adhesive to dry out and shrink and pull the leather out of place. As the adhesive shrinks, so does the leather.

All the leather in my 2009 XKR is still like new, including the dashboard, because:
1. I always put the top up when parked outside and use a reflective sun shade on the dashboard;
2. My XKR has always been garaged;
3. I condition all the leather 2 - 3 times a year to keep it supple. I use Griot's Leather Conditioner because it has a thin viscosity like water and is absorbed into the leather instead of sitting on top of it.

It probably would be a different story if I was in a desert state like Arizona or in South Florida where the summer heat is brutal. Here it's just Hotlanta!

You might want to start a different thread since this one addresses 07-09, not the 2010 onward. They are a different animal with a unique set of problems.

Lbroderick,
Beautiful indeed!! I am in the Los Angeles area also. Where did you have the customized upholstery done? I may want to visit them for a headliner estimate.
Thanks.

Yes I too am interested in this particular motor car, and am curious what problems are known , plastic radiator replacements ,plastic timing chain tensioner etc.? I personally don;t know if this is the case therefore I'm asking are these some of the issues to anticipate . and how much for a clean car show I expect to pay.

Not a danged thing outside normal maintenance. Buy one, take care of it, drive the hell out if it, then in twenty years sell it for $100,000.

THIS ^^^
My 3.5 yrs experience:

1. Aircon radiator is crap, replace with aftermarket when aircon stops working
2. Brakes need to be oem pads and discs unless you like pain and spending money
3. If you get water in the footwell get someone to fix it - its a bad drain design that needs cutting open
4. If you live in Europe your pedestrian sensors might need changing at some point

Find a good Jag specialist...unless you do your own work. Get all your fluids changed including supercharger, gearbox,.differential and power steering and you will be in a good place.

The 4.2 is a strong and relatively straightforward car, im very glad i bought mine

bobby,

Don't be concerned about what's likely to break until after you've found "the one."

The 4.2L X150 models are now anywhere from 12 to 15 years old, so what generalizations can you can make about what repairs to expect? None, because there are too many unknowns to give any specific advice, except to pay a Jaguar dealer to do a Pre-Purchase Inspection. That PPI should use the Jaguar Certified Pre-Owned Checklist, which will identify areas that need attention and an estimate of the repair costs. Often, the cost of that PPI can be used to negotiate a substantially lower price from the seller.

Note that a PPI from a Jaguar dealer usually won't address paint and body/chassis damage and repairs. I recommend that you also have a PPI done by a body shop that is Jaguar-approved in aluminum repairs, since the X150 body and chassis are aluminum.

Prices can range from under 10K to 20K or more depending on location, mileage, condition, colors, options and rarity. And if the top goes down, the price goes up - particularly in Florida!

As always, BUYER BEWARE! Do your due diligence and NEVER rely on CarFax to BUY a car - they only report what has been reported to them. But you CAN rely on CarFax to NOT buy a car. And never trust a used car salesperson, unless you get it in writing.

Don't buy an extended service contract until after you've searched this Forum and the internet and read the pros and cons.

Stuart
