So I've read thru a couple of these posts but can't tell if a backup light can be added as a replacement of the rear fog light? Seems really dark backing up and I'll take as much light as I can get. TIA
The easiest way to get two backup lights is to replace the fog light assembly in the left rear trunk lid with a corresponding left rear tail light assembly from a UK 4.2L XK model that has a backup light.
The fog light is always closest to the center line of the roadway. For North American market models, that's on the left rear since we drive on the right side of the road. UK market models are the opposite, since they drive on the left side of the road.
You can try finding a used left rear inner tail light from a UK (right hand drive) 4.2L on ebay.co.uk. Or you can contact Forum sponsor SNG Barratt, since they operate on both sides of the pond.
Unless you modify the wiring harness, you'll have to push the fog light switch to turn the new backup light on and off.
Or you can do it the hard way by replacing all your taillights with the newer LED design from the 5.0L models, since 2010 is when Jaguar began using two backup lights. Many Forum members have done so, and there are several threads on how to do it.
I wish I knew this last summer when I was pulled over for a routine traffic stop and asked to turn on all my lights, including my reverse lights.
I received a ticket for the “burnt out” light!
Damn!
