The sensors bolted to the rear of the crossbeam

The Workshop Manual procedure is to remove the front bumper but, as others have posted, they can be changed from below after only removing the undertray.

Whichever way you choose to access them, it's then simply disconnect the harness plug and undo two hex bolts for each sensor.

I didn't need to reset anything after replacing the faulty sensor on mine. The warning message disappeared immediately and never came back.

Thanks Graham, how easy is it to remove the front bumper as it looks like this would be the only way I could get access as I can't get under the vehicle?

A few years ago I purchased a replacement grill after a pigeon decided to shred itself on mine and made a mess of it, but despite attempting to undue a number of bolts, I couldn't see any way of releasing it!

I'm not much of a mechanic, but do lots of DIY around the home.

It's tedious - there's a lot of fixings but nothing difficult about it. Here's the Workshop Manual procedure:

Front Bumper Cover 76.22.78.pdf

I didn't need to lift the front of the vehicle to access anything and it took me a couple of hours. It went back together a lot faster.

Hi all,

Since a couple of days I am also getting the pedestrian system failure message intermittently, in particular if car is parked in hot environment.

I have read about a TSB here above describing how the sensors need to be changed. Could someone here please point me to this TSB, if it is available here on the forum somewhere? Thanks!

For those who have fixed this diy: Any chance to access the 2 sensors from above only removing the upper radiator shroud on NA XK and get the updated sensors fitted there?

I haven't got the original TSB document but here is the text of the March 2008 version. This is a re-confguration procedure and not an instruction to replace sensors. It may have been superseded ........

1. This procedure requires IDS DVD111 with Patch file 3 loaded or later.

Connect a Midtronic battery conditioner/power supply to the vehicle.

2. Connect IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session, by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle.

3. Follow the IDS prompts to read the vehicle configuration.

4. When prompted 'Do you wish to read diagnostic trouble codes?', select 'NO and then press 'tick' to continue.

5. When the 'Content Model' is displayed select 'Vehicle Configuration' tab.

6. Select 'Module Programming' from the 'Vehicle Configuration' menu.

7. Select from the menu 'Configure existing module'.

8. From the drop down menu select 'Impact classification system'. Press 'tick' to continue.

9. Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task.

10. When the task is completed, exit the current session.

11. Disconnect IDS and the battery charger/power supply.

As you can see from my earlier post, I removed the front bumper but other members report managing to reach and change the sensors without doing this. Not sufficient space to get my big hands in there!

Thanks again!

But this TSB on only refers to some kind of software reset if I get that right. It doesn’t speak about refitting revised sensors with newly drilled holes and respective instructions on how to go about this.

Sorry, I didn't actually read the thread. I just looked for a newer version of the TSB quoted

You are referring to the one attached.

Have you read this entire thread?

I followed the TSB and drilled a new hole for the revised sensor - another member simply fitted it at an angle with one bolt. Apparently this does work.

I did and haven't had a problem since I mounted the new one's. Can't see anything wrong with fitting it in an angle as it's a FRONT impact sensor!:-)

All

Thanks a lot! Now this is getting more clear to me. With the updated TSB I understand that Jag started to fit the new sensors as of model year 2009. This means my 2011 car should already have new style sensors. So replacing them should not require drilling of new hole. As my car is without supercharger, the accessibility of the sensors should be easier, ie. no bumper removal necessary according to this thread.

The only issue I am now not sure, is if I can exchange the sensors from top removing the radiator shroud or from below removing the underbelly plastic shield.

Today I got my new obd reader and I found the following error code which I guess refers to a faulty right side pps sensor failure

Translation of the green section above: Sensor for crash severity, frontal crash right.

so what does this mean? Probably replace the right side (driving direction) pps sensor?

Short answer = YES.

Here's the extract from the Workshop Manual for code B100496:

Thanks Graham! very helpful!

Now I only need to find out how the right sensor is best accessed, ie. in my non supercharged Xk maybe from above. In case anybody has done this sensor replacement on a 5.0 NA car himself before (MY2011-> no drilling required?), would extremely appreciate a hint how to best access.

As a guide, the cost from Jaguar is 85 UKP. None of the aftermarket parts specialists in the UK are offering a discount on this.

Given the unreliabilty of this sensor, I wouldn't trust a used one.

Thank you Graham

I will check the prices here in Switzerland and in case there should be a huge difference, I will ask back here.

All

Oem pricing for these sensors is not quite similar here (cost almost the double of the UK price). Any alternative suggestions how to get a pair of these other than from the local dealer are welcome.

My right sensor btw is only failing if outside temperature is quite hot (above 26 centigrade, ie. 78F).

Just inspected the location of the sensors with an endoscope that I stuck through the main and lower radiator grills. After some fiddling around I found the lila colored new version style sensors on my MY 2011 looking up through the lower grill with the endoscope. So at least no drilling required.

Will get to this task next time the car will be on a lift to remove splash shield and radiator shroud from below as described in the workshop manual to exchange both of these sensors.
