2008 XK - help upgrading Navigation/iPhone system
#221
Well guys I bit the bullet and order from a unit from Kurt's supplier. They advised that it shipped today. Let's see how long it takes to arrive. due to my having ten thumbs on two 84 year old hands; I have arranged for a professional installation. All of your earlier correspondence will no doubt prove helpful to my installer. I will keep you informed as to progress

Hi everyone. First, thanks again to Kurt and peterV8 for blazing the trail. I connected mine today. It arrived on 12/23 and I'm already disputing the TPMS,(see below). I have a few things to learn. Everything is working as it should. I don't have it mounted yet though. It's 22 degrees right now so I thinkI will wait to feel my fingers and toes before going back out. Time to remove the existing was 7 minutes but I've done it so often. Time to install was 10 minutes.
The biggest time saver was the video.
Initially, no sound, just crackling from the speakers, then I recalled that I retrofitted the 2010 onward iPod setup. I pulled that out of the MOST loop and everything was fine. That took 20 minutes to figure out and 5 minutes to correct.
One note, I am in a dispute with the seller over the TPMS. They sent me an external one and I wanted and paid for an internal. Difference is the sensors. The external screw on to the valve stem and are 3/4" around which would look hideous I think. Then they tell you to download the app but they don't name the app. So that's on hold for now.
Kurt, sent you a PM.
I'm going to study it and see what I can do and can't
EDIT: I have the same issue as Kurt with the flasher connector not fitting. All done. Total actual install time was around an hour not accounting for re-reading this thread. Again, thanks to Kurt and peterV8. My OBDII dongle is shot so ordering another and a OTG cable for my iPhone so I can set up CarPlay.

Some of my own questions answered during install and would have figured out if I'd just waited to get the nav unit.
I did't have any issues with speakers. I thought I might because I upgraded my base system to Premium but it turns out I did it right. I can't find my notes from that project though. No matter, it's a non issue.
The question in post #179 abut those colored wires was answered - they are for the speakers on the base system. Premium is plug and play as Kurt also noted.
The white/yellow wire that I'd asked about in post #203 does have a home and the pic was a bit of an optical illusion. It was as Kurt noted, a six pin connector with just two wires. I thought it was a 2 wire connector. I don't know what it's for, but that's ok.
What's great is I no longer have to deal with the 1980's antenna that was used in the 07's. Sound is great. No more radio cutting in and out.
I'll put my 2017 Volvo map disks up for sale.
I'll pull the disconnected iPod retrofit hardware (Jahummer/ Cambo setup) but first might retry it and confirm it does/doesn't work with this setup just for grins.
I'll probably hang on to the GVIF set up awhile longer, in case I revert. I won't revert.
I'll keep all the OEM so I can reinstall if I ever sell and it's a sticking point for a buyer
The images grew on me over time but once installed, it's really not as overwhelming as I thought it might be.
Also, though I'm a fan of buttons and knobs, my wife reminded me that her SRX is all soft touch and it's not an issue in her car. That changed my thinking too.
Screen can be customized - not sure what I will do but will probably use a split screen setup. I'm going to research android tablets to see if that can be set up when it turns on.
I'm also going to search for some screen sleep function - maybe an app that I can download.
I already had a back up camera retrofitted (Jahummer/ Cambo setup) so that just plugs right in and works great.
All of that said, I won't be driving anywhere until the snow is gone. But hey, it works great in the garage!

As our "Member Emeritus", you've earned the right to flip this project over to a professional installer. Use those 10 thumbs to pour yourself one last cup of eggnog, kick back, and enjoy the rest of the holidays. I hope the new screen experience meets your expectations.

After market camera is RCA Jeremy. As part of the retrofit, I used an RCA to Fakra connector cable. The new unit is an RCA so I was just able to remove the fakra cable and plug it into the unit, so you would do the opposite and have a fakra to RCA cable.

Me, I'd rather change it than adapt it. Course, if a person was to return to stock..... an adapter would be a much better choice.
#228
What I had
What he needs if he's interested in doing this
Don't hold me to the colors of the Fakra though. I know their are different fittings but I don't think the need to match type for type would be necessary as it's just a cable to cable connection.

I probably wasn't clear. I installed an aftermarket camera long ago and used it with GFIV. Worked fine. Then Cambo/Jeremy had the retrofit reverse camera set up, which I followed but I didn't buy an OEM camera. I just left mine in which terminates RCA. I then used an adapter to go from RCA to Fakra. In Jeremy's case, he has OEM which I presume terminates Fakra. He would need the opposite adapter. Certainly no cutting.

No sound from the rear speakers. Not sure what's happened. I know I had sound prior to the install and I'm fairly certain I had it after the install. I followed the video and confirmed with Kurt in a PM.
The seller offers support through WhatsApp which is nice but they had me send them a video and them pics of my connections and I'm waiting to hear back. I've only tweaked a couple of things like sound volume on start up and then download some apps, TPMS, Torque Pro, and a file manager.
Any thoughts random or otherwise would be appreciated.
The unit has the 2 RCA plugs, and there is only one combination that will allow sound.
New hearing aids arrive Monday so I had wife's assistance yesterday. She said she thought the Sub was working. I can't hear S&&T right now. Sound coming from the front speakers (tweeters and woofers) and I can feel the center speaker thumping.
There is only one fuse in the OEM system and its for the amp, so power is not it. No way I blew out two rear speakers at the same time. I may reinstall the OEM system just to confirm as I don't know how to test a speaker

If you have nothing else handy to generate tone or a signal, the old 9Volt battery trick should work, connecting the speaker leads to the battery should cause them to thump. Also can use a VOM to test for open circuit and load.
EDIT: also going to reiterate one of these tone generators/wire tracers/continuity testers come in handy quite often and can be found even cheaper elsewhere
