Ready to pull the trigger on having the wheels powder coated - they are in dire need of refinish
Wheels are off. Car is on axle stands and I知 now having a dilemma
Was always going to go for OEM standard silver, until now, now I知 contemplating gloss black
anyone out there with a gray xkr and black rims that they would like to share, I知 putting it out to vote with the family
I considered doing the Blackout Look on mine; black wheels and blacken out the shiny bits. But then I look at my hypersilver Nevis wheels and always (so far) decide to keep them as they are.
Course, I COULD use some of that peel-off paint, see how it looks before I chunk out bucks to change permanently.
Black Selena wheels on a 2009 XKR Portfolio become invisible and are not attractive.
The OEM color for the 2009 XKR Portfolio Selena wheels was called "Shadow Gray", and was darker than the more common "Hypersilver". I haven't been able to find the color code for those wheels, but it's not exactly the same as the Shadow Gray exterior paint color. Note that the center spokes are chrome overlays, and are not painted.
When I had all 4 of my Selena wheels completely refurbished a couple of years ago, I told the shop foreman what I wanted. He explained that using a black base coat with a hypersilver top coat followed by clear coat would do what I wanted. He left the barrel black, which made the face of wheel really pop. I waited a week to let the paint dry and then ceramic coated the wheels to make them easier to clean. Here's how they turned out.
Compare my XKR Selena wheels to my XJ Kasuga wheels that I also had refurbished in Hypersilver. The difference is that the Selenas have a black base coat, which makes them darker.
That base coat makes a world of difference - so much more depth. Those Kasuga wheels look like the PITA-to-clean stock wheels on my Infiniti Q50. Too many dust-filled slots!
Stuart , They do look fantastic, kinda how mine looked but with lots of peeled off areas
i did notice the barrels (never knew that was a name) or the back side of my rims sure appeared to be intentionally black. I can see how it makes them pop
OK, the high gloss black is off the list, just called the shop and told them to hang fire on the silver, I need to find my shade of gray ;-)
I was a little concerned as the silver was called ‘BMW’ silver
The plastic chrome inserts were removed by myself prior to dropping the wheels off, all the spring clip things got destroyed in the process. Wasn’t able to find them in my local Lowes.

As I recall, my chrome overlays are metal, not plastic.
If you can't find speed nuts locally that fit, you can order the OEM Jaguar retainer nuts from your local dealer, internet Jaguar OEM Parts vendors, or Forum Sponsors who sell parts such as SNG Barratt (recommended).
You'll need a total of 40, because each overlay uses 2 speed nuts and each wheel uses 5 overlays. The Part Number is C2P16127 and they're packaged 1 to each sealed plastic bag.
These little suckers are expensive, and list for $1.75 each. You may be able to find a similar speed nut at a local auto parts store that fits for a lot less.
Don't worry that it says it doesn't fit. Trust me, it does because I used them on my car.
