Thanks to George's terrific write up, I was able to undertake the task, and have converted my taillights to LED!

So many thanks to George!

There was one thing in doc that got me confused (not unexpected), and that had to do with the pin-outs and wiring the stop/turn/tail light unit.
George suggested modifying the socket (changing the position of the female connections) on the car side of the connection, to make it easier to replace the lamp unit in the future, while his pictures showed that he had modified the socket connector on the lamp side of the connection (rearranged the male pins).
George is a certified tech, so I'm sure he has the tools and expertise to do this, but for the life of me, I couldn't get the individual female (or male) connectors out of the socket. So I had to come up with another solution.

So I opened up the wiring harness on the inside the car, and cut the individual wires and put male and female disconnect connectors on them (female toward the lamp, and male toward the car), such that I could rearrange the wiring to the socket, without accidentally breaking the socket in trying to take it apart. This is what the left side looks like now:

I had a bit of trouble understanding George's tables of the socket pin changes. His starting point for the 2007 wiring for the left and right sockets is very clear, its just how he tries to explain what you want to end up with for the 2010+ wiring that baffled me. So I logged into Topix and looked at the wiring diagrams for the 2007 and 2010 models, and here's my simplified guide that I used to tell me what I wanted the final configuration to be:

Pin 1 = Tail lamp
Pin 2 = Stop lamp
Pin 3 = unused
Pin 4 = Turn signal
Pin 5 = Ground
Pin 6 = unused (but I did not cut this wire, I left it connected)

The above applies to both the left and right sides.

Again... Thanks George!

Observant members who have been on the forum for some years may recall a thread of a similar title which was first posted as a question by GhostriderXKR08.

After much discussion, georgekale posted the definitive guide shown here in post #1. I set this up as a new thread to be able to add it to the "sticky" XK/XKR - 'How To' / DIY Repair & Maintenance thread. A link to this thread appears there under the LIGHTING section. (thanks to kj07xk for the suggestion)

This may make replacement 2010+ (2009+) tail lights even more scarce.
