The spring coupler had a ton of backlash in it but it wasn't broken into pieces until we removed it. Couldnt believe all the rust and how bad the coupler bit into the shaft. The LS Superchargers us a solid isolator but I believe the jaguar's still come with the torsion spring coupler. Jaguar offers a new snout with coupler but still has old style torsion coupler.

What reasoning do they have to NOT use the solid isolator?? The CTS-V crowd proved the solid isolator is infinitely better than the original design and takes care of the failure.

I guess when I had mine replaced last year I should have asked more detailed questions on what exactly the new part was I stupidly thought it was the same isolator GM had been using.......

Default Torsion Coupler

I just had mine replaced on my 2009 XKR. They are the only plastic part in the supercharger & very commonly get worn out. The factory replacement has a spring on it while many aftermarket brands have no spring. The springless couplers will last longer but they make a bit of a whining sound so I would stick with the stock Eaton torsion coupler. If you are out of warranty as I was the kit you will need costs $125 at SuperchargersOnline, Worlds largest Supercharger Resource. Get Serious About Power. On 4.2 engines the entire supercharger needs to be removed because there is no access to the bottom bolts of the snout. This turns it into a big job. A mechanic will charge you about 6hrs labor. I know it looks like getting the supercharger removed would be fairly simple but there is a back bolt up against the firewall that took a certified Jaguar mechanic an hour to remove. I have no idea if the bottom bolts of the snout are accessible on the 5.0 engines. If so this would make it a simple job. The good news is that the rest of the parts on the supercharger are pretty much bullet proof so changing the coupler & oil should get you another 60,000 to 80,000 trouble free miles.

If you are out of warranty & are having a Jaguar dealer do the work buy the coupler online because Jaguar will charge you double for the same part.

Default Torsion Coupler

I noticed a few posts above mine there was the question of why Jaguar still uses the coupler with a spring. From what I was told its simply quieter. You already get the natural supercharger whine & if you add the solid coupler to the unit it increases the whine. Some people may like that but I figure Jaguar wanted to keep the whine to a minimum since its not a true sports car.

Sacrifice a part so a few people who have no idea what a supercharger is will not have a little whine coming in the car? Brilliant, also there is hardly any supercharger whine on our engine as it is.

Solid coupler will not increase or effect the whine. Torsion couplers absorb some of the shock from rapid rpm changes. It also reduces any harmonics form the belt going into the supercharger drive gears.

I notice that the replacement coupler you use is plastic, whereas the original replacements I've seen pictures of were machined metal. Obviously the metal ones have no 'give' at all, so any unevenness in the belt motion apples force straight into the supercharger gears - does the plastic provide a bit of flexibility & shock absorption?

Jaguar never used machined metal, the torsion coupler has some springs and plastic.

If you want to find the isolators, I sell on eBay. Look for key words below.

Ok, my 2010 XKR is making this noise, I recognised it pretty much straightaway as my previous 4.0 XKR had a rattly S/C which I ended up replacing with a 4.2 S/C to eventually get shot of the noise, I think in that case the main bearings were slightly slack.

So at idle, it does sound like a big marble in a tumble drier. With the engine cover on and the bonnet down it didn't sound that bad, but today I had the engine cover off and the noise was quite disconcerting, my air con guy was really worried! LOL

Anyways, it appears there is a technical bulletin for replacing the isolator, but I can't believe even Jaguar can charge £400 (ish) for just the sprung isolator - can they? Does anyone know what is actually in the kit, part number C2D38554? I can't find any image or details of what's in the kit apart from some clues that it may be the complete snout... but does that also include a new isolator?

And.... has anyone yet changed out the snout on a 5.0? I did it 3 times on the 4.0 and it was a ******* of a job involving removing the complete S/C from the engine to get to the snout bolts, took me 2 days the first time! Is it any easier on the 5.0?

So annoyed that I'm not working for JLR anymore, I used to have full access to Topix and could look all this stuff up online... now it's like I'm blind!

Its a complete new supercharger nose drive with a new (same torsion coupler). Looks something like this kit. (this is not my listing!!!)

OEM JAGUAR C2D40425 SUPERCHARGER REPAIR KIT XJ,XF, & F-TPYE 3.0L SUPERCHARGED | eBay

I assume you have a 5.0 liter motor, they actually make 2 different kinds of 5.0 superchargers. The older superchargers have a vacuum bypass actuator and the newer ones have a electronic bypass actuator. The nose drive and the castings are not interchangeable between the 2 superchargers. The 3.0 superchargers even use a isolator that is a different size.

I recommend the aftermarket isolators for the 5.0's and new snout bearings! 50% of these superchargers do not have smooth running nose bearings and I now replace all nose bearings when I get them.

You can find my stuff on eBay but you will have to search for the kits per the forum rules requiring links.

Hi, thanks for confirming that the Jaguar kit does actually have a full snout and isolator included.

I managed to find a workshop manual from an XFR5.0 s/c last night and went through the process to change out the snout/isolator. It seems significantly easier than on the 4.0/4.2 litres where getting to that back bolt on the S/C is such a pain in the ****. Pretty much seems to be a bolt off/bolt on exercise.

I'm tempted to stick with the proper kit, as I didn't find the aftermarket isolators so good on the old 4.0 S/C, but that could have been due to a dodgy centre bearing set. When I finally cracked and fitted a 4.2 S/C it had a good looking spring isolator in it, and I used that, and everything was perfect.

Of course, I'm now also considering if I should upgrade the pulley whilst I'm dicking about.

First though, will be a phone call to the warranty people this morning to see if they will cover getting a garage to do a standard fix before I make any further decisions! I am not holding my breathe.

It would appear that because the jaguar TB on this issue specifically uses the word 'wear' in the description, the warranty company won't cover it.

I'm tempted to do it myself and just stick in a replacement coupler as a minimum as the kit (snout and coupler) from JLR is £400, and I have at least 1 if not two solid couplers laying around at home from when I sorted out my old 4.0/4.2 supercharger.

But.... Does any know if the 5.0 coupler is the same size as that used on the old 4.0/4.2 superchargers?

OK, so...
I've got my 2010 XKR in at the dealer and I had an idle knocking that sounded like a collapsed lifter (from back in my day of working in the bays)....
dealer says no, but... there's a problem with the supercharger. At first they were going to replace it (I've got a pretty good warranty) but now they're just going to "replace all the bearings." They've assured me that if this doesn't work the company will pay to put in a new supercharger.
Should I be worried? I'm planning on taking a long trip next week...

It might be worth checking exactly what the dealership means by 'all the bearings'. The TB that is mentioned on page 1 of this thread specifies the kit which will replace the snout and coupler (likely to be the cause of the noise) which will mean new bearings in the snout. Anything beyond that means replacing bearings in the S/C body itself. From what I've been seeing in my investigations, this doesn't seem to be much of common issue on these 5.0 S/C (yet! )

If the knock noise is the S/C coupler you can see the cause and effect on the first post of this thread. Not likely to be an issue, it's just unpleasantly noisy at idle and indicates that the coupler is getting weak/worn.

My assumption from what you've said is that the dealer is going to do the TB to fit the kit, and if it's still a problem after that will swap out the complete S/C.

Is your dealer a Jaguar dealer/specialist with access to the TBs? If not it might be worth showing them the TB details.

Piersman:
Go to my thread:

You'll see the breakdown on the "supercharger rebuild" that was done at the dealership along with a price breakdown. I posted the whole invoice. The supercharger rebuild is on page 3.

Curious as to your thoughts.

Yep, they've done pretty much what I suggested above. Started off assuming a bearing in the supercharger, although 'front bearing' doesn't mean much, and then realised it's not, it's the classic isolator knock, and then have fitted the snout kit.

Interesting to see the parts they've used in addition to the kit, looks like I'll maybe need to order up an intake gasket and cooler pipe connector when I do mine although neither of these parts are listed on the TB as required, I assume the garage thought the originals were not re-usable.

They, uhm... somehow damaged the "coolant pipe connector" when either removing or installing the thing.
Which is how I know that part is only available from England. Took another 10 days to finish the repair.
