Default 2011 XKR Convertible Top Shut Down

Recently purchased a 2011 XKR. Was investigating the install of a trickle charger with convertible top halfway closed. Removed the battery cover and the luggage guard and walked away to get the wrench to add the charger. As I was walking back the rear deck closed, rear window/top portion when down and the rest of top went down without latching. Now the controls for the top will not work and I cannot latch the top? Anyone have any ideas? Appreciate any insights! Thanks!

Did you put the luggage guard back in place? The top will not operate without that guard installed correctly.

Agree, and the most likely problem.

Never leave the top midway through the cycle for more than a few seconds and walk away. When the pressure bleeds off after a couple of minutes or so, the hydraulics will release as you described, and then the top will then be out of sync.

First try holding the top down button for a minute or so with the engine running and see if the top opens (make sure trunk is closed and luggage guard is deployed). If it does not, you will need to reset the top per the owner's manual.

There are remote terminals easily accessible by the rear brake lights, why are you doing it this way?

I guess I had the same question as I mounted my charger extension with the top up. Pretty easy to get to the battery and connect the leads. I recall early in the reading of the OM to not leave the top in any position other then full up or full down.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I did not read the discussions about not leaving the top in a midway position. I will try your suggestions and report back.

Had to reset the top per the Owners Manual. All in order now. Definitely a rookie move. Curious if you would recommend connecting the charger to the remote terminals or directly to the battery connections?

I found it easy to connect it to the battery + and a ground stud near the battery. Leaving the top up I pulled the top cover assembly and the 4 plastic studs removing the battery cover panel. Once there it is easy to see the battery + positive connection and there is a 10mm stud on the post clamp. Attached the + terminal of the Ctek extension cable. On the right of the battery are a few different 10mm studs some holde the other electronics in the area but just found a stud and check it for ground. Attach the other end of the wire to the stud using a nylok nut. Ran the wire under the short carpet into the spare tire area and taped it down. I then ran the wire out the center water drain rubber plug and attached it to a waterproof marine cigarette acces. socket. I park the car and plug in the Ctek . Easy.

psucat1988:

There are several posts and threads about connecting a battery maintainer on the XKR's from years 2007 to 2009 and 2010 and beyond. Use the search tool.

Here's a link to a thread I wrote and started. This thread has over 41,000 views.....

On the 2011 XK/XKR MY and beyond, you can connector the positive lead direct to the battery 10mm post and the negative ground located in the spare tire wheel well on the ground post.

On the 2007 to 2009 XK/XKR MY, both leads from the maintainer can be connected to the 10mm battery terminals.

Then use a CTEK Comfort Extension for more cord. That is your using a CTEK brand. If using a battery Tender brand, I am sure they also sell an extension.
