Hi all,
I am relatively new to the used Jaguar market and in particular the XK R. This forum has been great for info and pictures. Looking to purchase a 2012 – 2014 XK R with the following options;Dynamic PackSports active exhaustPerformance seats (not a must)Dark exterior color (trying to avoid red)Under 35k milesThe past 2 or 3 months of searching it seems the Dynamic pack on the 2012, 2013 models is rare here in the states.There is currently one for sale but it has the Italian racing red exterior color which I am not a fan of. The car is competitively priced and my question is does the red color have a poor resale value? Also since I am new to the used jaguar market not sure if my list of options is too aggressive for my budget (max spend 40k)

Since I live in NYC the car will be used on weekends only and I have time to continue to search for the right car, any info regards availability of the Dynamic pack, resale value of the red cars and also if my options list for my budget is too high would be great to hear.

Personally I think the Italian racing red is a great color and would have no problem with resale... I know you stated that your max budget is 40k, but if you could stretch that another 5k your in the XK R-S territory, which would get you all the options your looking for and some.... Just a thought

Thanks Texas, mileage is a big thing for me in my search for the right car and I doubt there is any XK R-S for sale with under 35k miles and under $45,000.00. Appreciate the suggestion though as it would certainly tick all my of my options list!

This is the car I have been mulling over the past few weeks, if only it was a different color I would snap it up. Seems like a great deal.

Does red adversely affect the resale value of a Jaguar XKR? To the contrary, because red is relatively rare, you can argue that it is worth more to the right buyer. Because many X150 buyers are "older gentlemen", red may be too flashy for them. That's why the most popular X150 color is black. But I'll never own another black vehicle because I don't want to be reminded of the color of my final ride. A red XKR will turn heads and some people mistakenly think that it's a Ferrari.

If you change cars yearly or sooner and depreciation is a big concern, you should buy the lowest price, oldest model year that you can find. That way, most of the depreciation has already occurred. With a few exceptions (Ford GT and other limited production supercars), all new cars depreciate rapidly and taper off as the car gets older. You'll have a bigger depreciation hit with a 2014 than a 2012, all other things being equal.

However, if you plan to keep your XKR for 5 years or longer, what difference does depreciation make? As a weekend toy, you probably won't be putting a lot of miles on it so, with proper maintenance, it should last a long time. Just be sure to get a good indoor car cover (I assume you live in an apartment in NYC with underground parking) and a CTEK MUS4.3 battery maintainer, as a weak battery will cause a variety of electrical gremlins.

If you can afford to live in NYC and have a car (garage space ain't cheap), I don't understand why depreciation is a big concern.

You're making an excellent choice with the 5.0L XKR.

 

Buy it and put a wrap on it in any colour you want...

 

Have you seen an IRR car in person? If you only drive it at night it will be a quite dark colour. It only tends to "pop" red in bright sunshine.

 

Although I am bias here I found during my 6 month search that Red was a very rare color. I had also found most of the XK's were either , Black , Gray , Silver or White. I would say that any other color would be rare. I love the lines of the coupe but I wanted a convert. To find a IRR coupe to me is very rare. So look for what you want and good luck in your search.

 

Personally, I don't see the adamant regard for mileage. If a person was to purchase a car to drive a LOT, then a lower mileage would be recommended. If a purchase was to be only occasionally driven, then why not start out with a few more miles already logged? In a few years there will not be many miles added, and therefore would BECOME the low-mile vehicle you want.

I purchased my 2010 CPO off a three-year corporate lease and it already had about 45k miles when I bought. Quite a lot. Now five years later it only has 63k or so and is now considered "low" mileage.

 

If you are buying based off of resale value then IMHO the XKR is the wrong car for you. These are built to be enjoyed and age faster sitting still than moving. Sitting in a dark corner just welcomes Lucas to the party

 

I'd drive mine more often, but I have a few other cars/trucks that I also need to drive. Plus, I'm retired so there isn't a Commute for me. Well, plus my XKR is a broke POS right now anyway.

 

Not to me. The only color of car I have EVER bought, was RED!
Its just a matter of personal taste. What appeals to you. From my perspective, you can keep the blacks, greys, and whites, just too boring for me (not my wife though, she wanted any color but red when I bought my Lexus last fall, but she finally relented, and now she thinks its a great looking car).
Although, had I known about the Emerald Fire green when I was shopping for my XK, I might have been swayed from my pursuit of red.
There are some other 'non-standard' colors out there that are also nice (blues, greens and caviar), but they wouldn't have pulled me away from red.

 

Black on Red, spectacular when clean and shiny. My 95 Mustang GT Convert is one pretty car, black on red. Too bad it sits in a garage for years.

 

Thanks all, some good insight into the mileage thing which was good to read. The comments on it make sense. I am not overly concerned with resale value, just thought it might be a factor as to why the XK R with Dynamic pack and low miles is so competitively priced.

 

Well, if we are honest with ourselves, the late models did not sell well so they are all 'rare' and the 'rarer' options are even more rarer. The economy tanked in 2008 so the most popular cars were the '07's. The '09's and '10's were next with the 5.0 and revised body / interior. The '12-'15's faced a lot of market competition with an outdated body and tired nav setup. The upcoming F type also had a good bit to do with the car's downfall.

All years were heavily influenced by Ford in a good way so reliability is Ford good, quality is Ford good as well. Compared to the current Tata based car I think the Ford era car have more value.

 

Unless you really don't care for red, that color is not a tough sell. I looked for quite a while to finally find a red XKR. My personal belief is that a sporty car must be red, (or green for the Brits) or anything except black! As someone mentioned already, I foresee my last ride in a black car, not wanting to push it.
