2012 XKR: Cold Start Idle "Ticking"

Here is a video of mine, I know you have another engine right there to compare with, but just trying to help since your original video saved my butt. (btw, my first video ever, excuse the pic quality- audio should be superb, recorded on very good mic on phone)
Completely cold start (not started in 4 days)
50k miles on the engine
In garage, left the sound of the hood closing at the end as a volume reference.
Phone was on tripod, so any shake you see is me getting in the car, no vibration from the engine.
Note engine cover off so as not to muffle any sounds.

Without doubt. It really works and you have only something to gain, regardless of problems, you need to do this. Ask another forum member Pwpacp.
Are you changing the oil yourself now. I can show you some very inexpensive, Jaguar approved oil to do the cleaning so that you are spending much.

u102768,
If leisure permits, do another recording from crank to shutdown. So that we can get a time reference.
I do not hear a problem in yours just listening over the computer speakers, will put on headphones later. I am really wanting to learn the sound you and your mechanic describe, so I can identify it myself.

The sound is no where near as noticeable once the engine was fully warmed up after a 20 minute drive:

u102768.
I see what you mean.
I suggest you do nothing mechanically until there is more clearer indication of what it is. No I am not using you as a Guinea pig. Were mine a couple of years younger than yours or lower mileage, it might have worked.
You know your way around an engine to know that there is no additional penalty if the part you suspect fails but there is a price to be paid if your guess is wrong.
There is a data point you might find of interest. 4 days prior to the video I posted, I started the car for the first time in 4months. And that was to meet a visiting forum member for lunch. (yes that's how redundant its becoming in this neck of the woods, and you dont realize how well you have it made in OZ, its the ideal country for it, parts unavailability not withstanding)
The car misfired for the first 5 minutes.
Then it cleared up.
Cobweb in mass sensor, unlikely, fuel varnishing, most likely, the clearing up was the clue.
You too mentioned it clears after a while.
Why not try to do an injector and oil pathway clean.
Its far more pronounced in yours, to the point that its made me notice it faintly in my recording.

An update on my noise on the XFR-S.
Took it back to the dealer and I pointed them to the high pressure fuel pump covers and asked if they had been re-installed correctly after the recent work on the engine (8 exhaust tappets right bank, both cam timing chains, guides and tensioners). Car was returned significantly quieter but the service adviser could not tell me what was done precisely.
There was still some residual noise at cold start but significantly better than previously.
Took the car for a second opinion to my usual mechanic and we added some Archoil oil additive AR9100 to the recent dealer fresh oil (I have used this in all my cars since 2008). This quietened the engine almost immediately and from this point on, the noise during cold start is acceptable and after warm, the engine runs beautifully.
To be sure, I dropped in to Mike Roddy Jaguar in Moorabbin, VIC, Aust. and he had a listen. His response is that these engines are inherently noisy but that mine is the quietest one he has heard to date. He also suggested that the level of power from the engine with the factory spec oil is not usable (traction issues) in everyday driving, so he suggested I try a slightly thicker engine oil, a 0W30. I am going to give that a try shortly (AMSOIL 0W30 with specs that exceed Jaguar spec oil), plus add the Archoil oil treatment and see how I feel about the engine running thereafter.
I am also an avid fan of the Archoil Fuel treatment to maintain the injectors. Been using it for the same period of time (one bottle for a full tank twice per year) across several manufacturers and models without every having issues with injectors. This is not an advertisement, just saying I found a product that works for me.

I have the same ticking noise that stays in time with the engine rpm on cold starts, and disappears after driving 4 or 5 miles. The noise seems louder in the winter and still disappears when the engine warms up. My stethoscope shows it to be the loudest on the valve cover bolts near the back of the engine, and the noise is similar to a worn hydraulic lifter (of course it is Not). This is my 1999 XJR with a 2002 XJR supercharged 4.0, and no VVTs on this model. The timing chains and tensioners were all New with the engine swap. I left this 1999 XJR with the Jag Dealer overnight, and they heard the same ticking on the cold start - and offered no suggestions as to what the noise is, but offered to install New cylinder heads. I like the idea that it might be a fuel injector - or is that just wishful thinking?
Thank you,
Mike
Thank you,
Mike

This post brings back memories. Someone messaged me today regarding my recording of this ticking issue and if I still had the files…but unfortunately I do not.
i still have ticking that drives me nuts after they replaced my VVT’s it eventually came back. It is what it is but it’s slightly different now….
dealership says it’s the injectors…. I heard it in one of those videos above right before they turned the engine off.
