2012 XKR Engine Noise
#21
ok, I give up. HOW do I add a video file? I have tried to add the video since the very first moment I wrote this post. I have followed the instructions: Manage Attachments, Select File, Upload....at first I thought it was because the file was an MP4 file and that file type is not listed. Then, I thought it was the size 47 MB, so I then reduced the size to 11 after finally finding a video editing app, and then I changed the file type to wmv at 11 MB. It still will not upload.
Merry Christmas.
To answer the replies so far:
*** this Jag is at the local Jaguar/Land Rover dealership so I would hope a pre-purchase has been done, and I would never buy any Jaguar without a pre-purchase inspection
*** the noise was audible at cold and warm temperatures without any change so perhaps it is just a normal engine noise. But, it does not sound to me like it is normal and I do not remember the 2008 4.2 XKR we test drove 2 years ago sounding like this
*** I do not think it is the high fuel pressure pumps because I hear the noise at cold temperatures upon start-up and after the 15 minute test drive.
Now, if I can figure out how to add the video to this post you can hear it also and tell me if I am hearing a normal sound or if it is something else.
Also, I am going to pass on this one because
1) it is not what I am looking for. I decided I want to be very specific: white, chrome wheels, XKR, 5.0
2) until I know if this noise is normal I cannot buy this one or any other one
Thanks for the replies so far.
Merry Christmas.

Oil spec STJLR 51.5122 was introduced in 2014 for the 3.0L V6 supercharged engine.
So, yes, you're right that STJLR.51.5122 oil was available in 2014, but it was for the 3.0L V6SC engine. This thread is about the 5.0L V8SC engine, and that oil wasn't available from sources other than Castrol until 2017.

With all due respect, you're mistaken if you're saying that OW-20 was the first 5.0L oil spec. JLR changed the oil spec in 2017 for all supercharged engines to STJLR.51.5122, from 5W-20 to 0W-20. See:

The OP gave this thread the title "2012 XKR Engine Noise". That's the 5.0L supercharged V8 engine.
Oil spec STJLR 51.5122 was introduced in 2014 for the 3.0L V6 supercharged engine.
I don't know the date of the change to include the 5.0LSC engine in the STJLR.51.5122 specification, but it wasn't until 2017 when that spec oil became available from manufacturers other than Castrol.
So, yes, you're right that STJLR.51.5122 oil was available in 2014, but it was for the 3.0L V6SC engine. This thread is about the 5.0L V8SC engine, and that oil wasn't available from sources other than Castrol until 2017.

I have owned many JLR vehicles over the last 20 years and purchased most of them from the same main dealer, though some have been serviced at 3 other JLR dealers in my area. In 2009 I attended a private event for the introduction of the AJ133 and X351. Much ado was made about the "magical" new oil developed with Castrol as the new engine was so "precise" only the special 0W20 oil with molecules so small it's use was mandatory or the engine would be irreparably damaged. Some years later, the 3 main dealers I frequented the most switched to Jaguar/Castrol Professional 5W20 based on warmer climate as the 0W20 had not enough viscosity for warmer climes. The original 0W20 however remained in service for non-tropical regions.
If you haven't read Posts ##18 and 20 by XJsss in this thread, you should. Here's the link again, and a screenshot of part of his discussion.

Yes I’m quite familiar with the thread, the differences in oil and why, doesn’t really have anything to do with my post. As I said in 2009 main dealers initially used 0W20 but in warmer regions switched to 5W20. Both of my late model vehicles have 5W20 Castrol fill caps and as I’ve said, the main dealers have always used 5W20 since.

The sound to me seems to be the sound of the injectors. I noticed something similar on my 1996 Century V12 6.0 and started to check the sound of other similar motors, and they all sound like that. The ticking. More investigation didn't change my mind and always brought me back to the injectors, also with some other brands I compared it with.
And it stays and stayed the same for many years.
Concerning the oil numbers, my 2012 V8 5.0 Sc keeps getting the 5W20 as prescribed before.
The first figure, the 0 (thinner) or the 5 (a bit less thin) in this case, is for colder temperatures. The last, the 20, for the warmer temperatures.
So I would say it depends on were you drive your car.
I use it in Mexico, so I assume the 5 will still be ok. And they even recommend the 5 if you can't find the 0, no matter the area, so it seems that it's not such a big issue.

Ok, so far everything clear, but now comes the key question: Is the 5W equally thick in higher and in lower outside temperatures, or will there be a difference in thickness at the start?
And if, how much difference more or less?
In other words, could the 0W at the start by -10 degrees outside be competitive (in thickness) for instance with the 5W at 24 degrees outside at the start?

Having owned a few 5 litre XKRs, this engine sounds normal to me but not nice. This is due to the 5 litre having direct injection so the injectors have to work harder and make more noise doing so.
I now have a 4.2 which runs much quieter, as a V8 should, IMO.
Supercharger couplers and water pumps can wear out at 50k miles.
Find a nice 4.2. Much nicer car in many ways and the 4.2 supercharged is just as fast as a normally aspirated 5 litre.
