Question 4.2 XKR 2007, catalyst failure + replacement part

Hi there,

I am a new Jag owner and just subscribed to the forum.
I apologize for asking a redundant question that might already have been asked in the past...
My 2007 xkr Portfolio Coupe has 85000km on the clock and the left catalyst is apparently broken according to the diagnostic I got from the Jaguar concession here.
They told me that pieces of the broken catalyst were causing the rattle in the exhaust and that I should replace it. Ok fair enough, that can happen I guess with every vehicle...
I am looking for a cheaper replacement part than the original one that costs around 1400€.

Also, the mechanic at Jaguar said that there could be pieces of the broken catalyst inside the silencers and that if they cannot extract them, I would need to replace them to get rid of the noise.... the total bill would then be over 3000€ !!!

Could you guys give me some advice on that matter ? Is there a web site where I could find parts that would fit without ruining myself ?

...... my baby

XKR 2007 Exhaust System

Thanks in advance for your help !

Cheers,

OEM ones are expensive.

I can sell you mine, they have ~60,000 miles on them but were cut at the bottom so you would have to weld the pipe back on before use.

Another option is to go online and get aftermarket ones. They may be less restrictive and give you a different sound, though.

Lots of info on different CATs here on the forum if you search.

@gkubrak thanks for the prompt reply !
Yep, you're right I should have first read through the different posts about it...
I'll do that and get back to you concerning the ones you're selling.
Would you advise me on any aftermarket ones ?
Anyway, thanks a lot !

Welcome to the forum mrdf77,

I had a catalyst fail on a Jaguar X308. It sounded like pebbles being shaken around in a tin can. However, the broken pieces couldn't get out in the direction of downstream silencers because of the baffle construction of the catalyst. I doubt the design principle of the XK is any different.

Still a major expense to replace one catalyst with a new OE.

Let me ask a question (and I don't mean any offence). Are you absolutely certain the rattle is from a broken catalyst? I had a centre exhaust heat shield fail on my 2007 XK and it sounded exactly the same. The diagnostic code could be a failed HO2 sensor.

Graham

@GGG Hello and thanks for the welcome
It's an interesting reply.
Look, I'm not sure of anything. Sadly I'm a very poor mechanic, so I am discovering all about this car that I dream to own for quite a while...
The broken left catalyst is a diagnostic from the main Jaguar garage in the area, so I am hoping that they are honest, and I have no reason to think otherwise. (i cross my fingers)
Concerning the silencers, well I definitely hope you are right and no pieces of the cats can find their way through them.
I am waiting on a second diagnostic from another mechanic...
I'll get back to you as soon as I get it
Thanks again for your help Graham !
Cheers,

I got my catalytic converters to sell since I'm running with high flow cats, out of 08 xkr. I had around 70k miles on them when removed, but they are in great shape with see through honeycomb. Also tested them for flow and they flow as good as new. $600 + shipping

Dont use cheaper aftermarket, theres a reason recyclers only pay $5 for those and $60 for oem. They dont last. Buy good used from someone here before crap aftermarket cheaper ones

Here is a link to the ones i installed. They are probably the cheapest out there and I really don't care. They work and sound great. Replacing both of them 4 times would still be cheaper than buying OEM ones. Even $400+ for a single CAT is ridiculous.

@gkubrak
Thank you for your reply and for the link, that's very helpful.
I see that I'm not the only one to have to change cats....
Could you also tell me if pieces of the broken cats can find their way through the silencers ?
How many miles have you already done with those "cheap" cats ?
I am obviously interested.
Thanks again.
Best regards,

Best regards,
Iv'e put about 2000 miles on them with no issues. Great sound and performance.

Can't speak for the broken pieces since my old ones never broke apart like you describe. I also don't know what the silencers look like internally so I can't comment.

Hi there !
I found aftermarket cats here and think will give it a try as it's the cheapest solution out there and I'm struggling with other bills at the moment ...

Hi there,

I just thought that it would be nice to close the subject of the catalyst problem here as it could be of some use to somebody one day.
It's also a way to thank you all for helping me through it !

So after doing my homework the best I could I ended up going for rather cheap aftermarket catalysts and chose direct fit JMJ branded ones made in Poland (TÜV compliant).

I got the pair for 519€ (tax included) and got them mounted at a local garage for 150€ (which is equivalent to 3 hours of work). So total cost 669€

Just for a reminder here on the chronology of events :

- When I noticed the exhaust rattle, I decided to bring the car to the local Jaguar dealer. They diagnosed that the rattle was due to a fault in the left hand side catalyst (the ceramic had broken inside which was causing the noise)
- Their mechanic told me that replacing that catalyst would cost me 1400€ for the part + 200€ for fitting it to the car. He also told me that most probably pieces of the broken ceramic had found their way through the intermediary silencers and maybe even in the rear muffler.
- I would then be looking at a bill of 1400 (left catalyst) + 450 (intermediary silencers) + 3000 (rear muffler) = 4850 € (for parts) + 300/400 € for the job .... MORE than 5000€ !!!! ....
- I said to myself "oh this looks like a total rip off !!!". I then looked at myself in the mirror and started asking myself if I really looked like an idiot.....?!
- Anyway that's when I decided to turn to you guys to help me out !

- So I got my beautiful 2007 4.2 celestial black XKR Portfolio back with both catalysts replaced for "a mere 669€", the sound is great and will keep you all informed about the longevity of this "cheap" aftermarket solution!

Anyways guys, thank you all for your precious help and keep that in mind each time you go to the dealer ....

Cheers,

Marcos

make sure to check your catalytic converters after maybe three four thousand miles as my aftermarket units completely failed after only 7,500 miles

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your message.
Could you tell me how to check the cats other than waiting for them to fail ? Honestly I don't know... Other than taking them apart ...
How did yours fail? Did they break into pieces ? Did they cause a rattle in the exhaust ?
Also, yes, you are right I do not expect those cheap cats to be as high quality as the original ones ; but I can still replace the pair 3 times for the price of just a single original one.... So I am more than happy to take the risk.... I hope they will last 7,500miles .... that would be already quite an achievement for such a cheap solution, otherwise they did come with a 3 year warranty anyway !
I'll keep you guys posted on whatever happens in the future

Thanks again for your help !

Cheers,
