Default 4.2 XKR Exhaust Cat faliure

Hi, I have a ... 2008 68,00 mile XKR 4.2 and love it ! it has a full jag history and the dealer waranty ran out Sept 2013 and have a warning light on , dealer checked it and reset it, had a couple of codes but tells me its the cat2 that is the issue, light came back on today 80 miles after being reset... so taking back to check codes again to confirm..

I have read that in the USA ( Im in UK) that there was a 8 year 80,000 mile warranty being given on Cats ??

Is there an after market Cat or am I about to say toodle pip to a few £K to have these replaced ,, dealer says has to be done in pairs and plugs at smae time .. ??

Cheers

Not sure what plugs you mean, presumably the O2 sensors. Wouldn't have thought you'd need to change them at the same time as the cats. Other thing is it might just be an O2 sensor that's failed, not sure how you'd know unless you swapped whichever sensor(s) flagged the code for new ones and waited to see if the code came back?

Anyway, short of changing the entire exhaust for one that includes aftermarket cats, I know Powerhouse in Sheffield do sports cats for the 4.2 for £750 for the pair. See here and scroll a bit past halfway down the page:

Jaguar Supercharger Upgrade | Jaguar Supercharger

Some places that sell exhausts with sports cats will tell you that you have to have your car remapped afterwards because the extra flow will cause the car to think the new cat is faulty. Powerhouse don't mention that but it's worth bearing in mind. The other thing you might be able to do is fit "O2 spacers" where the O2 sensors plug in to the exhaust, then attach the sensors to those. They move the sensors out of the path of the exhaust gases a bit, reducing how much gas they see back below the level they'll trigger a fault.

Hope that helps!

Welcome to the forum Brittlebones,

Unfortunately here in the UK we don't enjoy the same level of manufacturer responsibility for failed Cats as happens in the US.

If you post the actual codes (not how the dealer describes them), this could show whether the dealer is correct in condemning the Cats.

Dealers are often too keen to throw new parts at a problem before eliminating all the possibilities.
