Default 4.2L XKR Exhaust Options

I have removed the Fuse 19 on the exhaust, and I love the way it sounds in general. However, one thing that is not consistent is the amount of "popping" and crackling that I get on aggressive decelerating downshifts. It seems to depend a lot on weather conditions (I get more of that sound when the car is cold and the weather is cold, too).

I am usually staunchly opposed to modifying the car, but I really think a minor tweak could really increase my enjoyment of the car! So what are my options? Has anyone had any luck with getting the crackling/popping sounds on the 4.2 XKR? I would like to keep the exterior look completely stock.

I would love the sound like what's here at 0:30 or so...

Consider trading in your current Jaguar to buy the F-Type or XKR-S...then you get the sounds from the exhaust that you want without any mods.

OR

Take your Jag to a performance exhaust and muffler shop and let them install a whole new system. This is the easiest. Pulling Fuse #19 cannot duplicate a custom built exhaust system for your car. There are plenty of performance shops that can assist you. They are everywhere.

Somebody posted this in another thread--the Fabspeed Maxflo Exhaust.

Is anyone here running that exhaust? It's hard to tell how much crackling there really is in the video.

I think it's something like $1500. It may be worth the price!!

I imagine an exhaust like that is not an active exhaust.

I wonder what impact it might have on emissions readouts. It would a real bummer if you spent that amount of money on a new system, only to find out that your car no longer passed emission standards testing.

Maybe I'm being dense. Does doing this mod remove the catalytic converters? I thought it just deleted the resonators.

If I had to do it all over. I would do this mod. Fairly cheap and great result..

Remove resonater 14 and 15, with straight pipes, leave the back box, and remove fuse 19... Then you are good to go..

Not too intrusive, and still great burbel and deep sound, much improved over the stock version...

My 2 cents.. good luck..

or have a look at this thread..

Thanks. I was reading that other thread. Then I came across this Corvette thread.
http://m.corvetteforum.com/c6-corvet...ml?styleid=140

People on that forum say going to a crossover pipe definitely reduces the amount of popping in the exhaust, which is exactly the opposite of what I'm wanting to do. So maybe the solution you suggested would help me achieve what I want--just remove the two resonators!

Has anyone actually done this? And what does it sound like?

No change to emissions readouts. Unless you choose to remove the cats.

So I'm a little confused. The stock system has two headers that essentially feed into two independent exhaust systems (4 cylinders to each)?

Has anyone tried installing an H-pipe? I wonder what that sounds like.

Does anyone have a clip of what the exhaust sounds like just by removing the two resonators??

Can you explain how initially tried to recorded it? i.e. car in garage, outside, where was phone in relation to the car? I would think that you could obtain a pretty decent quality video 6-8ft behind the car or back and to the side slightly.

If you are receiving too much interference with background noise, try a cheap and simple gadget to help concentrate and collect the sound. Check out these photos, very simple devices you could make that may help.

While these people appear to be using them to amplify their speakers, the idea should work similarly well for collecting sound. ...similar to cupping your ear.

idk, worth a shot maybe...

These sound pretty good. Turn up the volume and bass and it will almost sound like you are there.

Thanks. So you just had the resonators removed? I believe you mentioned it would cost about $300 to do this?

The sections of the factory exhaust are all clamped together. All you have to do is in lamp the center section and have a duplicate made with an x-pipe instead of resonators. I would estimate cost between $150 & $300.

A couple of months ago I was at a Jag service department and a client was having his XKR exhaust upgraded to the factory performance package and it looked no different than what I did.
