Hi Guys,

So, I bought a 2009 XK 4.2 Coupe sight unseen. Car was in Florida I'm in Mass. Understood the risk and willing to accept the consequences. Here are the consequences.

After I received the car I drove it for a week to see if there were any issues I wanted my mechanic to address. One was intermittent starting. Sometimes it would take two or three pushes to get it to start. A message appears "step on brake to start". Diagnosed the potential issues as the ABS module. They discovered the existing module is from a 2007 XK. They "think" this is what the problem is.

The ABS module is $5200. I told them to put in a refurbished one. They told me they can't do that because the module has to be programmed to the cars VIN number.
It would seem to me a used parts software could be deleted and then reprogrammed.

Hope someone has some suggestions on how to solve this a wee bit more economically.

Here is more information on my car;Owner asked if these issues were battery-related. We are aware of that but it's not the issue here.

Battery problems show up as low-volt faults, and there were none stored in this cars systems. We

load tested the battery and found that it passed the load test. We scanned for faults and retrieved

numerous faults:

- P028-00 coolant t-stat (coolant temp low)

- U0402-67- Invalid data from transmission module

- U0167-00 - lost comms w/immobilizer module

- U0405-8F - invalid data from speed control module

We also retrieved following stored faults that won't clear -

- ABS system fault (U3002-81 - vehicle ID)

BCM fault (B1026-13 - steering column lock)

- Adaptive-damping system fault (U0415-86 - invalid data from ABS control module)

We tried communicating with the ABS module using several of our system tools but none of them

could connect and communicate with the module. Upon further examination, we discovered that

the ABS module is from a 2007 XK8

According to my mechanic putting in a rebuilt ABS control module may get the car to start but it will not clear any of the other codes. In checking further it appears it is not possible to reprogram a rebuilt ABS module to a different cars' VIN. Bosch makes the module and reprogramming leaves them liable in case of an accident due to a brake issue. So, I am hoping (underlined) the new ABS clears these stored faults.

yes, the infamous “the codes show everything is broke”.
If the battery isn’t showing 12.6 volts engine not running, load test or not, it needs to be charged.
once fully charged, perform system reset.
then read codes.

If the load test can’t show a minimum of 800 cca…. the battery is done and the mechanic needs a lesson on the battery requirements of these modern cars.

Do you think the ABS module from a 2007 is the reason for the intermittent start ? I talked with XeModex and the tech told me lost comm with the ABS module is a common problem. My mechanic says replacing it with a refurbished one will most likely solve the intermittent starting problem but the ABS may still be an issue and potentially hazardous

I am going to the mechanic on Monday and have them test the battery again to the specs you listed.

 

Greetings from central mass. I too bought a FL car without seeing it. I have a similar issue with my start button. Its been that way since I bought it over a year ago. If you find an indy with working sdd software let me know. I called most of them to see if they could activate my aux (for iphone) without success. Jaguar of Peabody told me they do not work on cars over ten years old. Jaguar of Sudbury did it for me ($210) but the mechanic said he thought he almost bricked my car doing it, so I did not mention the abs. Because these cars are both reliable and rare (especially around here) no one has experience working on them. This forum is going to be your best bet. It may be coincidental, but after I put some anti-squeal on my pads and lubricated the slides the start button problem was reduced. But I still have it. It scared me when I first bought the car, thinking at some point it would fail. But it never has - it has always started. Two things you should try before spending money....push really really hard on the brake and hold your finger on the button longer. I find doing that has solved my issue almost completely. It normally starts on the first try now. However there was a bulletin that said my year 07 (but not my vin) should have their abs recalibrated. Maybe you have one of those? A constant theme on this forum is the need to keep your battery charged and replace if old. I have read dozens of post like yours (with all those codes) that a new (or fully charged) battery fixed. Most people recommend an AGM type, and using a CTEK charger if it sits. But not me, I recommend driving it every day...good luck.

 

The 2007-09 start button is well positioned to catch dust, rain, coffee, coke, etc.
My money is on the button as a contributor.
SDD measurement function has the ability to send a start signal. That will isolate part of the circuit for troubleshooting.
I believe that the button function can be monitored by SDD but haven't checked.

Low voltage IS the gremlin in our cars. Don't overlook batter posts, etc.

PS: the start button can be disassembled for cleaning but it's easy to flub.

If you haven’t read in other threads of this forum, try changing you starting sequence:
1. Press and hold the ‘start’ button,
2. While holding the ‘start’ button, step on the brake.

It’s not in the manual, but it works, and since learning about it on this forum it’s the only method I use with this car.
Prevents having to mash the brake pedal when you stepped on the brake but didn’t start the car, and now the brake system is pressurized and it will take more effort to trigger the switch to get the car to start.

 

What evidence supports your ABS module not being the original one? If it's a date code, that means nothing as various parts in your car will have difference dates of manufacture. Lack of low voltage DTCs does not mean your battery is in good condition and voltage does not tell the full story. What is the date code on the battery? What is the voltage on the battery when you press the accelerator and brake and start button at the same time? As said could be a faulty start button. Could be a faulty ABS sensor. There have been other ABS modules which have failed but it is very very rare. Have you searched for any Jaguar specialists or main dealers with X150 experience?

 

Others have chimed in appropriately.
Get yourself a mechanic that has actual experience with working on Jaguar electrical bits.
I too doubt the abs module is the problem…. without checking the electrical capacity and the PROPER JAGUAR CODES!

 

And something to understand about codes is they don’t necessarily pinpoint the exact failure point, they can be a symptom of the actual problem.

Okay, I learned something new as a result of your post. I can't wait to get to the root cause of these issues. I'll share my findings in the hopes it helps another member.

 

Tried it this a.m. nd it worked like a charm. Fired on the first try. Waited 30 seconds and tried the standard way and it took two tries

 

New battery fitted? Anything else done? Are you saying it’s now working or is there still a problem?
