Adaptive headlight failure, replaced with another headlight, issue remains - RESOLVED
As the title says, I had an adaptive headlight failure and I recently replaced it with another unit I purchased off of eBay. The seller's description said it was AFS and I asked him to confirm it's definitely the unit with adaptive headlight functions and that the motors work, which he did. He said it's a perfectly functioning light.
I swapped the units tonight, but the issue remains. I've still got the dashboard light, and the headlight remains pointed down.
Anyone have good suggestions based on experience with this?
Thanks!

Punch the headlights very hard with the side of your fist, then lock the car open it and start the car again. It should be gone if you hit it hard enough. Otherwise try it a couple of times. It happened to me again this weekend, and that's how a number of us have found we can get them to work.

I assume you have the instrument cluster warning? Adaptive headlights have an additional module on each assembly on the inner side and it says AFS on it. The one on the bottom is ballast for the HID bulb. Might try resetting the car with a battery disconnect and also there is a chance the "new" one is bad as well. And finally it is possible the gear mechanism is jammed.

Super helpful, thanks. When I get back into town, I'll re-remove the assembly and check for that second module to verify that it's AFS. After that, I'll try the battery disconnect a couple of times. Not sure what to do after that.

The dealer eventually diagnosed the issue as the control unit on the opposite headlight, so I ordered that headlight assembly, sent the first one back, and that worked to get them leveling and actuating properly again. I guess one acts as a master control vs two independent ones, and for whatever reason it stopped working on the subordinate light.

Hi @resident_fng sorry to ask a follow on question, but could you clarify which side headlight went out initially, and which one (as you stated the opposite) was replaced eventually that fixed the issue?
Asking because this is the second thread (but only the second thread, as far as I have read) that states that replacing the headlamp on one side fixes an issue with the other side. See the other thread here: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-issue-205623/. In that case the passenger side replacement apparently fixed the driver side (US car, passenger side = right). Was it the same in yours? Trying to establish if in fact the passenger side (US) is the "master".
Thanks!!
