Default Alarm Issue

Hi all.I have problem with a wonky alarm. Several times the horn
goes off and by the time I get to it it stops. I've been suspicious
of the battery as I've had other issues with lights etc.
could it be a failing battery? Thanks in advance.Bob

A weak battery causes all sorts of electrical glitches. Your local chain auto parts store will probably load test it for free.

Ditto, also wouldn't hurt to check the voltage after sitting overnight.

yes, it is most definitely your battery putting out less than optimum voltage, and your symptoms are among the very many random symptoms of this issue. Unless your car is used regularly for fairly long runs the battery will not remain fully charged and at a certain point the voltage will be low enough to trigger these sorts of symptoms. Many, most, who are aware of this keep their cars on a battery minder (CTEK being the preferred brand) when not in use. Result? Zero electronic issues.

Had a new battery installed yesterday.Seems the gremlins are back!
The alarm (horn) started blasting this am. I realize there are a lot of
electronics on car but don't know where to start.Would a obd fault tool
reader help to diagnose the problem? Thanks in advance,Bob

Verify the new battery is fully charged. You might be surprised. I had a persistent low key fob battery fault until I plugged the car in overnight...

Just because it's a new battery doesn't mean that it's fully charged. Do you know how long it was sitting on a shelf before it was installed in your car?

Avoid low charge battery problems and buy a CTEK MUS4.3 battery maintainer. Lots of threads here about how to install it.

HOWEVER, don't use a CTEK for a preliminary charge. Best to charge using a 10A charger or better, for at least 12 hours.

The Ctek's intent is not to be a battery charger. If it still didn't get to step 7 then you need to get a battery charger hooked up . Something at 10 Amps or better untill the battery id fully charged. Once you have a fully charged battery the Ctek will keep it charged.

Update, after two days of smooth sailing the gremlin is back!
Battery is fully charged, left on ctek all night.
At 6 am the alarms started going off.
Could it be a sensor? The screen says alarm triggered
by trunk or sometimes the drivers door.
I'm thinking about taking it to the dealer. Any other suggestions
before I go to *******.

There's a back-up battery for the alarm (well, there is on my STR and I expect on your car too but check) and if it dies / gets low the alarm goes off.

Hunt around the workshop manual etc...

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result. So, again. Check the voltage in the AM with a decent voltmeter and report back with what it actually is. Do it after a Ctek night and again without the Ctek. Curious to see if the CTEk is actually doing anything (gut feeling is nope)...

Measured 13.38 this am. With ctek disconnected.
I thought Mr Lucas left the building! I remember him
from my early Triumphs and Jags.

Obviously, you connected the CTEK properly, because it went to the float stage. If you used the alligator clips, although they're very strong, it's possible that vibrations while driving caused one or both to not make good contact. Did you wire it directly to the battery terminals, or to the remote battery terminals in the trunk?

I hooked it up via eyelets to posts on main cables.
The voltage went from 13.38 to 13.08 in 3 hrs.w/o ctek
Probably a normal drop. It's got to be a sensor somewhere ,
me thinks. Probably bite the bullet and take it to a shop.
Thanks again.Bob

Just so were're on the same page here your 2009 is a 4.2 car and not a 5.0. Correct as the Ctek hook up is different for a 5.0.
