Anal car care

If they are the stock mufflers, I believe they are painted; only the tips are stainless. I use Never Dull on the tips and wash mufflers on the first bucket (wheels and rocker panels) of the wash. Generally, I'll do the mufflers first as the ground is not wet yet. I put a wheel brush into the mufflers with the soapy water shaken off to clean inside the exhaust pipe.

Not only do I share your passion for a clean looking muffler - but I also do my best to clean all the suspension, heat shielding material, etc. viewable from the rear of the car (albeit you would need to get pretty darn low to see it all).
I have one reco for "those like us" and that is to apply a product called "Sharkhide Metal Protectant" after you get the aluminum polished up and looking smart. I have had very good success with the product (previously I was a nut case with regard the same items under my 335i BMW - so I know it works well).

Ok so perhaps not the best pics and also not a Jag, but here my 2c
Below my A6 which was around 6+ years and approx 113k miles at this point, see the tailpipes below
In all honesty, the absolute best tip I can give to keep them looking as new!
Simply have a good / regular wash technique. As part of mine, the exhaust tips, door shuts, boot and bonnet lifted and always cleaned / wiped down.
Basically the grime could never get a foothold, and that was just shampoo and warm water.
As stated previously, I did clean up my sons and used 0000 wire wool and Autosol polish or equivalent
