Anyone ever 'chip' their XK?

Chipping explained....
The term 'chipping' is now slightly misused. Yes, originally back in the 80s and 90s, it was usual to have to exchange a chip to apply a new map to an ECU. Since the late 90s it became less and less common to require a replacement chip. We went through a phase where many cars could be done through the OBD port (an OBD remap) and, even those that couldn't, rarely needed an exchanged chip, and mostly just required to be opened while the in-situ chip was reprogrammed by contacting various points on the PCB (a Boot remap). In the past few years some great strides have been made and most cars can now be remapped via the OBD port or by direct connection to the pins on the outside of the ECU (a Bench remap). Opening an ECU, even for a Boot remap, is less and less of a requirement or necessity.
So, back to the term 'chipping', it is a bit of a legacy term, derived from the early days of chip replacement, that many people still use just to refer to a remap, no matter how it is applied, and whether or not the chip is physically exchanged.
I hope that clears up some confusion.
Feel free to drop me a PM if you want any more help.
Cheers
Paul
