Default Where to put stuff

Lots of folks have commented on keys and wallets. I'll give you my solution for the phone. I use this only for navigation purposes in my 2000 XK8 Convertible as the 20 year old technology doesn't compete with today's option. It's called a Spider, got it from Amazon, inexpensive. You can contort it to fit any phone. Use 2 top and 2 bottom arms to form a cradle for your phone, and 2 top and 2 bottom arms to wedge in into gaps/crevices for a secure install. I don't like to block the vents Once you form it to fit, you can remove it or reinstall it in seconds.

Mounted w/o phone

Mounted with phone case - you get the idea

I keep all of that sort of stuff between the passenger seat and passenger door. At least after my first left turn.

Lots of XK8 owners chiming in on this. It must be a more universal problem than just us X150 guys.

Default Love this thread

I’m currently using a gym/duffel bag I got at some promotional event years ago.

I took some laundry cord to loop through one of the handles on the ends so that I can access the zipper and reach inside.

it’s pretty convenient plenty of space to keep my gun next to my Bible on the inside and pockets around the outside for my Wallet, keys, cell phone, OC Pepper Spray, and a couple of hand grenades.

I forgot to mention that I loop the cord over the passenger seat headrest, so that it sits on the upper half of the seat back - though I suppose I could just as easily flip it around the other way.

In the left-hand side ashtray, just under the left side of the steering wheel.

Rather than sticking ugly phone holders and intrusive seat-side pockets all over your beautiful car interiors, or worse yet, permanently modifying parts of it,
why don't you guys you do as I do, just dump everything (except your keys) in the driver door pocket or center cubby?
My phone sits quite nicely in the cupholder on it's side. It's not like I'm gonna be looking at my phone while I'm driving, and I hope you guys aren't either. At least here in AZ Its shocking how frequently I see clueless idiots zig-zagging all over the road, even on the freeway, while looking at their phone instead of caring about where the 2+ tons of metal they're supposed to be in charge of is actually going.

Warning: I learnt the hard way to ALWAYS keep your fob or better yet, the emergency key part in your pocket when you're out in your XK. The problem is, there are spots inside the car where it can't sense the key fob (the driver door pocket being one). The car CAN and WILL after a short time lock the door if it can't see the fob. I've seen others report being caught by this too. Being locked out leaves you screwed, especially If your wallet, house keys and phone are also in the car so you can't even get to the spare fob. Unless you can find a friendly locksmith to come out, your only option is to have the car towed to the dealer. Ask me how I know.

It is universal! the only reason I saw it is the forum now sends that weekly email “journal” of trending threads whether you subscribe to them or not. Good way to cross pollinate, I suppose.

I don’t particularly have a problem of where to put my items but rather the issue of when they go flying when I accelerate a bit too quick...

As like many other women I too have the vice of drinking overpriced iced lattes while I drive places, and the cup-holder in the 97 - 05 XK8’s are not substantial enough to hold a 20oz cup (they tend to fly backwards), if anyone has an improvement for that particular cup holder it would be much appreciated!

For my phone, when navigation/Spotify is required I use a mount on the vent, which was already a bit broken when I got the car so I’m not too worried about it, and it hasn’t broken further. Otherwise the door pocket is OK.
Everything else (wallet, keys..) I keep in my purse in the ‘backseat’ and it stays in place.

Other items I leave in the car such as chargers, sunglasses, weapons of mass destruction, etc. I use the center console.

I like Minimal.

Phone: best system I've had: got something similar to
this this
. Just a little magnetic disk. Mine is smaller than the one in the picture, about 1" across. Comes with a thin metal plate that attaches to your phone (adhesive).

I dismantled the magnetic disk, and just kept the front part, throwing away the vent mounting fins on the back. Then designed a thin adapter plate to match the dash, and 3d printed it, so it fits perfectly, as non intrusive as can be. Mounted with standard double sided adhesive. Invisible, looks pro. This is a somewhat specialised skill set, but I'm pretty sure I could have just made one out of "Sugru" by hand, only a few $$ off amazon...

So I just have a nice small black disk on the dash, totally blends in. Phone just instantly "snaps" into place, can almost throw it gently towards the dash.. no messing around with those plastic arms that hold the phone, like I used to have. This has been a near perfect solution for me, I can't imagine going back to any other system now.

--

Keys: Wherever possible I change any door locks to something like a Schlage smart locks: keypad. "Schlage Encode" is great, but expensive. For me the best keys are no keys at all - impossible to lose, nothing to carry. Also can let guests or trademen in from my phone app etc, or just email them a door entry code if they are there for a week etc

Keyring is just 3 items:
  1. Car Key
  2. Work door key (aluminum not steel, lighter).
  3. Spyderco Lady Bug, attached with a short "snake knot" with 220lbs paracord, kinda
. Best lightweight keyring knife I found.
Don't ask how much time was wasted ;-) But it was well worth the investment in the end, as it's things I deal with every single day.

I recently got this for a few bucks and it actually works very well, especially for following GPS directions. (https://tophatter.com/lots/166152185)

For the last few years I've secured my phone by way of swiveling magnetic head attached directly to the dash by way of VHB (very high bond) tape. On one occasion so for I had to renew the VHB tape. So far so good.

The cupholder really is only for when the car is stationary, or its a great device to stain the backseat or fry out electronics.

I just hold the cup one handed, and in my older X100 XKR I just throw my phone in that deep door pocket.

Always an issue with non-SUV Jags, especially older models, i.e. XJS, pre-08 XJ's and XK's. Center console access too cumbersome to use for anything, and flip-up cup holders designed by someone who doesn't drink in the car. I have XJS which doesn't have anything useful and 01, 05 XJ8's with the above center console comments. The solution? Amazon has a variety of accessory "stuff" holders, cheap. I opted for one that slips between the console and pass seat that combines cup holder (real size) and several compartments for phone, wallet, etc. Works FAB!

If you don't mind, where did you get those? the "boss" likes them.
Thank you.

Default WeatherTech: https://www.weathertech.com/products/weathertech-cupfone/ for phone.

Typically, I travel around with a phone, a wallet and a bunch of keys. I have a hard time figuring out where to put things. Putting them on the passenger seat often finds them flying onto the floor at some point during the drive. I don't like the door panel, as it is not easily accessible while seated in the car with the door closed. I really don't like the windshield mounted phone holders, as it obstructs the view in the already short windshield. I don't like the phone mounts that clip to the vents, as I feel like the vent has the possibility of breaking, and I'd rather not deal with that.

Too bad manufactures don't offer some convenient places to put things while driving around. A built-in place for a phone would be ideal. None of them do this that I know of.

I thought about getting a headrest bag for the passenger seat. Should be pretty easy to reach over behind the seat and grab into it. But...I dunno.

Any solutions?

Thanks.
  1. Fits in cupholder, can be easily removed for that 2d cup of coffee. Everything else can/should go in the console.
