Unfortunately not ..... it's just the mechanism which is very poorly designed and, once it wears a little, it fails to hold the sliding door open. It is possible to remove the ashtray and repair the mechanism and there are explanations online about how to do it but I've not yet bothered.

In my case, the ratchety thing that holds the cover open, had simply fallen out, and was laying on the carpet under the ashtray. You do need to take out the center console to fix it, as that’s the only way to remove the ashtray. In some thread here, I described how I used some thin picture hanging wire to fashion support under that little plastic ratchet thing, to hold it up and in place. Been working well for quite a few years now.
