battery going dead

Even though a battery may be new, that doesn't necessarily mean it's fully charged. Prior to condemning the battery for replacement, check the voltage across the terminals with a voltmeter. The battery should show a minimum of 12.6 volts, if not, charge it for 8 to 10 hours at 3 to 5 amps and then retest it.

I leave my batteries on the charger at least overnight, and since 99% of chargers made in the past 15 years are "smart" and turn themselves off when the charge is full, it isn't a bad thing to just Let 'er Rip until finished, no matter how long.
You could also take the battery to nearly any parts store and they will check the load ability for you. Sometimes even charge it for zero dollars.

If you don't drive your XK daily and mainly take short drives around town to run errands, your battery probably isn't getting adequately charged. Many Forum members use a battery maintainer on a regular basis, with CTEK being the most popular and recommended brand.
