Hi there, I'd just like to give a big thanks to the contributors to the various threads regarding the dreaded Pedestrian Saftey System. You've just helped me crack the problem of replacing a faulty pedestrian warning sensor and I'm now warning free.
A couple of points that I'd like to add for what it's worth:
This image saved me a lot of confusion. As has been mentioned before, these are NOT the pedestrian warning actuators. Although the connectors are exactly the same and they can be plugged in. The image was posted by Ter11 in 2019 so THANK YOU.
There was simply no way I could get at the actuators from the top down as I believe is possible on the normally aspirated car. I couldn't even see them.
I did then remove the undertray - However, there was no way at all that I could actually get at the sensors due to the additional plumbing of the XK R (2012) again, as has been mentioned. That said, I could actually see the damn things, which helped me devise a plan to get at them.
This involved a bit of manhandling of the main grill and trim surround to allow me to get a socket onto the single bolts to remove and replace. It wasn't pretty, but I did manage to get the grill back and snapped in. I think I have sacrificed a couple of clips in the process, but the grill seems solid and time will tell if I've made an issue for myself.
As my car is a 2012 it has the newer single-hole activator. So these ones fail too!
It probably took me three or four hours spread over a couple of days with a whole lot of contemplation in between. I'd guess if I'd fathomed the grill entry solution, you could replace both of these sensors within the hour. More than half the battle was finding them so thanks again!
The revival of this thread drew my attention and I noticed the negative remarks about the system (and about pedestrians!). My two pence worth:
The system was designed to address new European safety legislation and Jaguar was the first manufacturer to meet it. The system deploys only at low speeds. When a pedestrian gets hit the crushable front bumper reduces the risk of serious leg injury - but the pedestrian still gets tipped over and lands flat on the bonnet, risking head injury. The deployable bonnet, popping up in 0.03 seconds, uses the airbags to absorb some of the impact force between the pedestrian and the bonnet as they collapse, reducing the risk of serious head injury. It works.
In 40+ years of driving, I'm glad to say I've never hit a pedestrian, and I hope I never will. Nevertheless I welcome the feature on my car and I'd never think of trying to disable it.
Hi all. I came across this thread as I have an issue in trying to reverse this bypass done by a previous owner.
My 2015 F-Type went into the dealer under extended warranty because after a year of ownership an error appeared “Check Pedestrian Protection System”
Upon checks the technician noticed there is a bypass with wiring both offside and near side latches and air bags have resistors fitted to bypass the pedestrian protection. They kindly did not tell Jaguar but said as it’s a mod this will need to be set back to factory settings before they will undertake any future warranty issues.
I booked in with a specialist to reverse the mod but they have zero knowledge and are talking about trying some refurbished airbags.
So my question is, is it a straight forward thing to reverse? Any advice or knowledge is appreciated.
