Shemp. Do you happen to have your water pumps part number on the work order? Just curious if they have sperseded the part once again. I hope your issue is fixed and please keep us updated. Good luck.
[QUOTE=shemp;1837336]AJ813909[/QUOTE)YesI see that part number does supersede the most recent number C2Z32587. Unbelievable how many part number replacements they have had for the original factory part. How many times does it take to get it right?
I just posted this on the X351 (current XJ) Forum. It details the history of the 5.0L water pump part numbers. So far there have been 8! Stay tuned; it ain't over yet! Here's the link to my post #106: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-132537/page6/
Interesting. I just checked my paperwork more carefully and see that in December, they installed an AJ813909, thus replacing under warranty the C2Z31146 that was installed in August.
It makes one think that if this part has been superseded 8 times, firstly 1) have all those 8 replacement pumps failed as well? and more importantly 2) how much confidence should we have in the latest pump???? After 8 attempts what has Jaguar discovered as the real culprit now? It's amazing, because the basics of a water pump are inherently quite simple. How many other car manufacturers have water pumps that last 150-200,000 miles? I don't get that warm and fuzzy feeling with Jaguar.
PS....I wonder how bad my water pump must be if it was the very first one made for the car????
This thread is quite a sad but interesting read. Subscribed! I am looking to buy an XK/XKR 2010 or newer. To date I have test driven about 4 vehicles. Two of them had a clear coolant smell noticeable when you opend the hood, both at approx. 40k miles. The other two with about 30k mileage did not or at least I didn’t notice, but for one of them I was checking... smelling... very throughly.
I’ve had the coolant smell about the the time of purchase 4 years ago with 4,800 miles on the car. Now with 10,000 miles the smell is still there and dealership still refuses to admit any seapage and will not replace pump. I’m planning on trying a different dealership before my Easy Care warranty runs out within the next 1 1/2 years.

I’d give it another shot at another dealer. I mentioned the smell just because I knew I had the original pump (30k miles). I was surprised they found a small leak and decided to put a new one on. I never had any coolant loss or anything.

Unlike your situation......I've had to add very small amounts of coolant over time. Of course, considering I drive so very little, the amounts I add are also quite small, but never the less, coolant is still disappearing. I did have an independent (that I trust very much) as well as one Jag dealership check the water pump weep hole for any sign of seepage or crusty residue and neither were able to find anything. If it is leaking anywhere else, nothing has been found so far. My feelings are that considering it is a known fact the water pumps are faulty, I'd prefer to change it now while I still have a warranty and at least get that out of the way.

Agree 100%, if you have an original pump. I was simply getting an occasional 'cooked coolant' smell and slow coolant loss, nothing dramatic. When they changed the pump at my request, they told me the bearing was almost gone.
So, is it accurate to say that a B40006 VIN probably has a water pump that will need to be replaced at some point? So far (21,000 miles) and the XKR runs like a new car, but this has me a bit concerned.

Well, the first 5.0 XK was VIN B32753, so yours is reasonably early. Unless it has already been changed, I would keep an eye (or, more likely, a nose) out for coolant leaks. If you see or smell a leak, get it checked. In fact, whether it has been changed or not, and even after you get it changed, that advice still applies. The pump appears to be the main weak point on this engine, and the lack of a temperature gauge means you don't get any early warning of cooling issues from the instruments. It doesn't affect everyone, but Jaguar did go through several revisions of the pump to deal with it.
But:
It's reasonably easy to detect a leak - the smell of cooked coolant is pretty distinctive when you stop (smells a bit like burnt plastic or candle wax)
It's not an excessively expensive fix - probably worth getting it done regardless, if you're having any other engine work done.
What I find to be particularly interesting is where are any posts of those owners that HAVE HAD THEIR PUMPS REPLACED with any of the part numbers that have already been superseded. We are talking about from the original pump to the very last pump Jaguar is now using. Do we have any proof of these pumps failing as well? Why so many updates to the design unless all these replacement pumps were faulty as well? What's up with that?

I had the water pump in my 2012 XF replaced last summer with C2Z31146 which was the 7th iteration and it began leaking out the front almost immediately. At first noticing a slight odor I figured they'd spilled some coolant into the undertray or something and it will go away as it dries and burns off but eventually I started seeing the level dropping. Took it back in in the late fall and they replaced it again for free (pump had a one year part warranty) with the latest 8th iteration AJ813909. Will let you know in a couple of years if they got it right this time or not, maybe sooner if not.
