My daughter worked at Yellowstone this summer. I wanted to ship her car (Subaru Forrester) from Baton Rouge to Billings, and I started looking for a transporter months in advance. I finally settled on Amerifreight, who is a broker, and the quoted a decent price. I gave at least a month and a half notice. Well they only list it within a few days of when the car needs to ship, and basically no one wanted to ship it. They immediately raised the price in order to attract a shipper. Ultimately they wanted close to $2,000 and I'm still not sure that anyone would have bitten. I quickly tried to go to U-ship, and they declined the shipment. In the end, she drove her car there, and missed my nieces wedding and ate the cost of the plane ticket that she had bought to go from the wedding to Yellowstone.

So that is two bad experiences for me in trying to ship a car, as above I tried to ship my Jag from Topeka to Baton Rouge and couldn't get a reasonable price.

Getting a reasonable price and faster pickup probably depends a lot on the location of point ‘A’ and point ‘B’.
Living in the Chicago area (point ‘B’) and shipping from larger cities (Seatle & Minneapolis, points ‘A’), I’ve had quick and reasonable shipments.
These were also shipments from car dealers, using transporters they have used before, and the transporters are more likely to want to keep that relationship.
Don’t know if it would work, but you could try checking local used car dealers and ask if they ship their cars nationally, and how much it would cost to have them ship your car by their normal shipper.

I had just bought the Subaru for my daughter thinking that it would be an easy thing for the dealership to ship it. But no, they said they didn't do that.

My original plan was to just buy it in Billings. But I ended up buying in Baton Rouge.

Assuming you mean in US shipping, not overseas: They'll tell you what to do: < 1/2 tank gas, not too much stored in the car, nothing visible through the windows. Enclosed, car cover if you want. Open, don't use a cover because flapping will scratch the paint. Ask them to put it on top, facing backward. That way far fewer chips on what matters, the car gets moved a lot less, and you don't have a car above you dripping on yours. Make sure that they agree that it stays always on same place on the same truck that picked it up. Walkaround photos or better video before shipping.

I used BAT (Bring a Trailer) Shipping. Painless, quick and my driver was as good as they get. BAT rep called me after I made the order and provided outstanding service answering all questions while also making suggestions. Even called after delivery to make certain I was satisfied.
