Default Catalytic Converter INSANE PRICE FROM JAG

Hi, All.

I have a 2010 XK that has 11k miles on it (I don't drive it much). It was throwing a check engine light and the dealer is asking 4k to replace Catalytic Converters on the car! Insane, the car is only worth like 25k!

Anyone have any recommendations on what to do?

Thanks,
Joey

Are you sure it is not covered under the 8/80000 emissions warranty?

Just kidding. Ask around and see if anyone knows anyone that you could talk to. Somebody you know must know somebody that works there!!!!!

I used to stay at the RAMADA INN on Route 17 go there for training a decade ago.

if not . just get some magnaflow cats on line , (preferably high flow) about $200 each . and they have high flow all state legal as well.
and have them welded in at an exhaust shop or a trusted private workshop.
that way you will be upgrading the car from stock with a nice power increase,
at less than half the price you were quoted for stock bricks .

Joey,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help forum to XK/XKR forum.

What to do? Ask for a detailed explanation of the reasons they believe the Catalytic Converters need replacing. At the very least I'd expect to see the list of relevant codes, evidence they'd been cleared and had then reset.

Cats usually only fail as a result of wrong fuel, misfiring or physical damage.

Graham

Thanks for all of the tips everyone! I'm going over to the dealer today and I'll talk with them about it.

Cheers,
Joey

If they are selling you a load bull, bring it to an indy shop. At least get a code print out from dealer and have them do a reset. See how long before it comes up again and what those codes are.

Aftermarket high flow cats are the way to go. I'd do an exhaust upgrade while you're at it. Unleash the beast!!

I think FrikkinJag (or whoever he is) has the 5.0 High Flow cats completed, and almost guarantee he could half that price.

Like Triple-G says above a failure in the Catalytic Converter is rare but not unheard of in general. I have had 15 cars over the last 30 years and have had a CC go bad one time. Something broke loose inside of the casing and was causing a clog, which choked my car exhaust, which made me not go forward so well. It was my car in college, a Toyota Celica. Point is that it happens...

You have some good alternatives on here that you should definitely explore, an aftermarket cat would seem to be the way to go.

Yes, if it is the cats, they are covered under warranty - federal law

Pay attention to those who have suggested that it is covered
under a mandatory emissions warranty.

So I found the law from EPA.gov and called the dealer to explain. They claimed that the tech wrote down the mileage wrong. Instead of writing down 11k, they wrote 111k. I think that's BS and they are just blowing smoke up my butt for covering for their attempt to try to get 4k out of me. My car does NOT look like it has anything near 111k on it. They are going to call me back today with their "decision."

They should not have to call you back with a decision, it is pretty black and white. They should have scheduled an appointment for you, then again if they didn't "know" it was under warranty in the first place, they are already a bit suspect...

What happened with this Maix. I presume you found a reputable dealer and resolved it?

To be honest, if driven long duration drives, and you leave a decent follow distance to avoid rock chips mileage doesn't really show.

Just waiting for my car back. They ordered the parts they needed. It's been a week but I'm not in a rush. They gave me a discovery
