You are right about the autoCOVR. I mentioned this to him and he said the part was too complex. Oh well thought I might have found an answer for you guys with the problem.
I know that Forum member Richzak had a difficult time removing the shifter knob from his 2009 XKR Portfolio convertible. He preferred the design of one of the genuine Jaguar accessory knobs and, unfortunately, buggered the original Portfolio knob while trying to remove it.
Heating the shaft with a hair dryer or heat gun might soften the adhesive and make it easier to unscrew the knob.
well, I wrapped padding around the knob and then twisted it free using vise-grips. It is just screwed on - there is no fixing screw - but as I wrote earlier I think a drop of locktite or similar was originally employed to keep it tight.

My 2007 Maintenance Manual says to release the lower cone shaped retainer/locking part then you can unscrew the handle. The retainer part is very hard to grip onto with out damaging the chrome surface, I believe there is a tool that should be used to grab the three equally spaced holes around it. I got it to move down a little so that the spacer ring is loose but not far enough as the handle just keeps spinning without coming off.
May have to make a tool for the lower retainer part if I cannot find it. Anyone know where to get the tool ...if it exists?
Hi all
The chrome around my shifter started peeling and rapidly got worse until I had to do something.
The replacement parts are stupidly expensive as it is the whole shifter assembly.
My solution was to sand the plastic chrome and paint what was left with satin black to make it invisible under the aluminium overlay I purchased on E-Bay.
Fitting was easy once the gear knob and collar were removed, I got lucky and they came off together just by turning anti-clockwise, it was tight but only needed hands not tools.
This addition has transformed the appearance of the shifter area and totally hidden the peeling chrome.
On the photos the overlay looks slightly brushed in effect, however it is not as noticeable in real life, perhaps the effect of the flash?

I did look at this aluminum cover until I read you can still see the chrome around the gate area once fitted (my chrome has peeled and looks pretty crappy)
Like how yours turned out , gives me a little hope now. May try this mod

Same problem as the original thread subject ... "Chrome lining around gearshift" is peeling. The part number is C2P5184 and it's over $500, which is insane. I was told because Jaguar still controls the pricing. Anyone yet found a solution as it's now March 19, 2022 ?

Yes, read this thread. There are a few option listed.

Considering for the price you’re getting an entire new shifter assembly, I think it’s quite reasonable and about the same cost as one from Toyota for the Camry, as an example. Also since it’s a genuine Jaguar part, who else do you think should “control” pricing?
If you want a used one they frequenting come up for offer on sites like eBay and the classified here….
