And I know a lot of the things I've said are very contradictory. Like that my max budget is $40k. It really is $40k, but if I felt I could spend $5k more and get a much better deal, I would do it.

As much as I think $45k is too much to spend on a 2007 XKR, I can't think of a car I'd rather spend it on. Nothing else is as good of a combination of luxury, handling, power, sounds, beauty and heritage, especially in this price range.

 

I just happened to look at the 2009 model I drove yesterday. It's priced at $53,999. According to Edmunds, the retail value is really $58875. The dealer indicated that they seem to be preparing to drop prices further. Trade-in is about $50,200.

I think I might actually consider buying it. I'm only going to drive the car maybe 5000 miles a year, so my maintenance costs would be very low. If I could get them to sell the car to me at $53999 with a CPO Select Edition warranty, then maybe it's not such a bad deal (I was estimating about $200/month for unexpected repair costs, which could essentially be eliminated by the CPO warranty). Given that it's a 2009 model, a CPO warranty would give me almost 3 years of worry-free driving.

However, I just did a Autotrader instant trade-in evaluation, and they only offered $44k for it. What's going on here? I get that it's low volume, but $15k difference between the trade-in and retail price seems ludicrous to me on a $60k car.

 

Sorry for all the posts, just thinking aloud now. I was looking on CarGurus.com at 2007 and 2008 XKR listings. About 20% of these 64 listings nationally have been listed for over 3 months or so. Many of them have been on the market for a whopping 200 days!

Yet the prices have not come down that much. Even the ones that have been listed for 200 days have only come down in price from $42k or so to $40k. Are they trying to sell these things or just let them sit forever? Too bad these cars are of colors that I really don't like.

 

Maybe when the November election is done buyers sitting on the sidelines will loosen their wallets and let the moths out. The uncertaintly caused by this dysfunctional government has paralyzed the economy in many ways. Prices are fair based on what JF members have been paying for their used cars this year, and what I saw last year when I was looking. '07 XKR listed at $50-60K Cdn were selling rather quickly, and '09's were listed $65-70 Cdn (note prices in Canada are always slightly higher).

The other possibility is things will get worse and you might very well see the pricing you want!

Well I have a tentative deal of $41900 for an 07 XKR in Minnesota with about 40k miles on it. The only things about it are it has some sort of chrome coverings on the mirrors, less than desirable wheels, and also smoked taillights that are sure to fail me for inspection. They agreed to $19500 for my trade. I don't think I will do it at this price. Maybe if I can get them down to $39500 or so, because it is quite a drive from DC to Minneapolis.

 

I guess one thing I haven't really considered seriously is getting an XK instead of an XKR. There seem to be quite a few on the market, yet oddly the prices for them don't seem to be much lower than the prices for an XKR (maybe $2-4k less, on average). Quite strange, no?

I need to test drive a regular XK, but how would you describe the difference between an XKR and an XK? Pros and cons? I know Ian Callum describes the XKR as the XK + 30%!

 

More horsepower. Tighter suspension. Hood vents. Quad pipes. R-badge.

 

Hmmm... that suspension is really nice. Especially coming from my Mustang, the steering seems incredibly responsive and nicely weighted. And the XKR isn't really a full on sports car! It's a GT car!

I was looking at both, but the one I bought was just the right combo of condition, mileage, options and color within my budget. The XKR's I looked at were never "perfect". I had a deadline to buy a car by, and that was that... Do I miss not getting an XKR? Sometime I do, than other times riding around the city on crappy roads, I do not not. I still prefer the front end of the XK more, but having the extra power would be fun. I also thought it may be a little cheaper to own in the long run.

 

Hmmm... well it looks like things may be starting to go my way. I see that some 2008 XKR verts are descending through the $45k range. So maybe some dealers are finally starting to get desperate. I better just wait it out.

I had agreed to pay FULL ASKING PRICE of $39995 after several emails back and forth when all of a sudden, they emailed me back and said, nope! It's $41999 now! They've had this XKR on their lot for 6 months, and they think they can get away with this crap?

Greater Chicago Motors is such a shady place, it's unbelievable. I can't believe they have such good reviews on DealerRater.com. They're clearly all fake.

 

Noted your comments about price and mileage. I have done 120'000 miles and it still drives like a dream. Probably worth less than 20k but make sure you get one with 16way seats.

 

It says $41999 on their site. Did you see this one? 2009 XKR Coupe $42,999?

It does say $41999, but it SAID $39,995. They "fixed" their mistake.

Unfortunately I'm not interested in any coupes right now. I did see a 2008 Portfolio in blue for around $43k from a reputable dealer, but it's in Houston, and it's not a Select Edition.

 

It's kinda crazy, XKR prices are collapsing all over the country all of a sudden this month. Several of the ones I've been looking at have decreased by price between $2-4k overnight!

It's ashame, because none of them are nearby. I just need one to be within 200-300 miles!! UGH!

 

Well, I'm starting to lose hope. Part of the problem is that all the cars I'm interested are way too far away. Another part of the problem is that the cars that are priced reasonably well and have an color combo that I'm interested in are in the hands of unscrupulous dealers with terrible reviews.

I guess I'm just going to have to wait. Do you think more XKRs will pop up in the winter months? Or will the XKRs just drop in price and eventually get bought up?

 

I bought mine out of Texas sight unseen. I had a ton of photos and I had the dealership that had the car take it to the local Jag shop for a once over and then talked to the Jag service bay myself to get their take on it. I had one little niggle with delivery, but overall the experience was positive enough that I'd buy a car remotely again. There are so few of these out there that if you have a particular color combo you're after, you're likely to have to look far and wide.

 

I bought mine sight unseen as well from a Jaguar dealer. It was too old to have certified, but the condition was literally like new and better than described. This is my 2nd Jaguar I have bought sight unseen and both times it worked out fine.

I did have an issue with the shipper. Shipping companies are all a bunch of lying SOB's and that have you by the ***** once you give a deposit. The actual guy who shipped the car (enclosed) was nice agreed the shipping brokers are all *******s.

 

I am currently working a deal on a 2008 XKR convertible with a Select Edition warranty. The car has about 48k miles on it.

In your opinion, is it better to buy a Select Edition warranty XKR with 48k miles on it, or a similarly priced non-Select Edition XKR with fewer miles? I will have it inspected by a Jaguar dealership, but at 48k miles, I think some of the items are going to start wearing (like suspension components, etc.), depending on how it was driven.
