Default Cost of Ownership

Consumer Reports has an interesting article in their Sept 2017 issue on the cost of ownership for many makes of cars. The article lists the cost of maintenance and repairs for cars three years old (2014 MY) and five years old (2012 MY) Some of the cars (BMW) show very low three year costs as maintenance is free for the first few years.

Here is a sample of the three and five year annual costs according to CR:

Make 3 Year 5 Year
Jaguar $285 $905
MBZ $265 $1085
BMW $ 10 $1125
Lexus $220 $520
Infiniti $210 $705
Cadillac $10 $530
Lincoln $40 $360
Honda $145 $455

Jaguar is not bad compared to other high end Euro cars. If maintenance and repair costs are your concern, better look at the Lincolns!

No surprise the BMW and Mercs are the highest.
Their arrogance at the service dept is breathtaking.

They got 4grand for brakes on my buddies 7 series. Serves him right for not coming to me first.

I wonder if their results were normalized after consideration of "bumper to bumper" warranty periods.

Does it talk about depreciation too or just maintenance costs? My 07 is extremely inexpensive as the original owner ate the depreciation. Do the basic stuff yourself and it's as cheap as driving a Honduh.

Pretty sure I was spending around 1K or so a year in maintenance issue on my XK.

No mention of depreciation in the article, just maintenance and repair costs. Not sure what it really means, other than a Jag is probably no more expensive than MBZ and BMW for repair and maintenance. Those costs are way high for my 2013 XJ as the only thing the car needed in 55K miles is oil changes and a cabin filter. I did those myself. I have only had the XK for a few months so nothing on it yet.

Without knowing the sample size of their 'review' it's really difficult to put much faith in the article. CR loves to do click bait articles and try to stay relevant and get subs. We print the rag and it's not a very interesting read.

I don't know too many XK's that are pushing 10k a year to get a relevant use statistic so are they pro rating all the little things in x miles to 10k to gain an 'average'?

Garbage in, garbage out.
