I had the same problem with my XKR. The cause was one of the motors inside the headlamp unit had gone bad. When I opened the unit up, a lot of the wires had lost their protective coating and some of them were touching. I'm not completely sure if that shorted the motor out or not, but it did cause the headlights to "park" themselves facing in and down. I bought a used adaptive headlight unit off ebay. I then had to use my Foxwell OBII unit to clear the headlight faults and then my headlights were back in business!

I forgot to mention that I've also had to replace the ballast unit on one of my headlights to fix this problem before as well. When I pulled mine and removed the ballast unit, it somehow had a bent pin. I put the new ballast unit in and that corrected the problem until one of the headlight motors died, but that was years later. I'm not sure if there's any way to test those units, but if banging on the headlights doesn't work, you may want to remove the headlights and inspect them. If you have an OBDII scanner that can read the headlight codes, that may tell you everything you need know!
