In truth, was it worth it to do it yourself? My indie charges $380 all-in to change all eight plugs.

Not quite with skin intact, the cut on my right index finger is still healing As for oil, I take your point but I'll personally stick to what Jaguar tell me is the right stuff to use, thanks anyway.

I guess that depends on how much you'd miss the difference between that $380 and the cost of a set of plugs. Also how patient and handy you are with car DIY. If I had to do it again I probably would, now I know how to get at them and I have low profile wrenches to get at the coilpack bolts on the LHS.

Had a look at the old plugs, the tips all look about the same colour and that appears to be OK so I guess no cause for concern with the engine. The two on the left came from the rear-most cylinders, bit darker discolouration round the threads there but I guess they're closest to the oil drains for the PCV system. The fifth one from the left has a nasty crack on it but that one took a lot of force to remove so probably cracked on removal.

Can't remember exactly (I generally have the DIS display to show remaining range) but a little under 60k miles, certainly no more than that.

I bought my plugs ( ILKAR7C10) for £55 on the Bay of E delivered last year, my Indy has advised they will change them for me when they take the SC off (for snout and oil) for half an hours labour, so £40 inc VAT. So job done for less than £100/$120

I have changed plugs/coils/points on previous cars but 8's experience means it's probably not within my capability now.

Now to ask them about a catch can install cost!

For the DIYer’s with 5 litre motors, did you follow the instructions for aligning the ground electrode? Seems they all must face a certain direction for best performance.

It’s in the workshop book. I’ll find and post.

EDIT:

The threads for the spark plugs are machined at a precise start point to ensure that each spark plug is orientated in
the cylinder correctly. The benefits of this are optimum spark plug intrusion into the combustion chamber to improve
combustion, idle stability, dilution tolerance and spark plug durability. The spark plug must be tightened to the
specified torque to ensure the correct orientation.

I can't find the bloody instructions at the moment but I recall it was something like tighten to 20Nm and then one additional quarter turn to align the orientation.

Wow. I haven't changed a set of plugs in ages-- but those look fine to me! They'd go into a coffee can with a little solvent and then a lite wire brush, and good to go.
And from what's described here, I'm not gonna DIY that job...

Dennis hiwz abiut you use the search facility of the forum as opposed to hijacking an unassociated thread?

Apologies in advance if youve never used an Internet car forum before
