Do the xkr's have a brake pad replacement sensor?
Dealer claims I need new pads, but my brakes feel rock solid. When I got my PPI done on the vehicle the Jaguar Repairshop didn't make any mention of it. Further, the mechanic that performed the inspection is so thorough he is a borderline asperger/idiot savant hybrid. This is my first owning this kinda vehicle, but don't brakes traditionally grind or squeal when they need replacing?

Yes they do grind when they definitly need replacing, because theyre metal to metal and then youll need rotors too. There are no pad sensor on the older jags(07 older )
i recommend pads at 2-4mm, because i deal with the public that may or may not be back soon. Like next time they come in it would be why didnt you tell me i needed pads last time. Now my brakes are grinding and i need new rotors too!!!!! So you begin to er on the side of you may or may not make it till your next visit. You can look through the wheels with a bright pen light and see for yourself, keeping in mind that the inboard pads will always be a little thinner than the outer

Save your rotors!
I recently replaced the front pads on my 2009 XKR Portfolio (Alcon brakes) at just under 30,000 miles, even though the Tech said I could go another 3-4,000 miles. The Tech also said the rotors looked good, so I decided to take a chance and not have those crescent-drilled rotors turned. My experience is that turned rotors always eventually warp since they are thinner and you ultimately have to buy new rotors. New Alcon rotors list for $489 each! I "babied" the new brakes for the first 100 miles and was very pleased that the new pads seated in perfectly against the "used" rotors - no noise, vibration, or pulling to either side when braking.
Bottom line: Don't let your brake pads wear completely out so you can keep your rotors from getting scored and not have to turn them.

there is no requirment through select edition, but in has to pass safty inspection which meens stops within 30' @25mph. Our belief here is that we do not want a customer who just bought a car from us to come in for an oil change in 5k after buying the car and be told they need brakes, tires etc.....but every dealer and preowned dept is differant. And then if a preowned car has too much money put in from the previous deal. Theyre not gonna put a bunch more in and loose money or have to sell the car for more than market.

the dealer wants almost $900 for front rotors, pads and labor.
i can order slotted and drilled rotors and pads off of ebay for $250 and go to a reputable jag repairshop for another $200 in labor for a grand total of $450
or i can order some regular rotors and pads off ebay and go to a franchise brake place like mienke and get everything done for $400 total.

Total cost for replacing front brake pads was $503.11. That included $388.11 for parts ($369.36 for the pads for the Alcon 6-piston calipers, plus $18.75 for the brake clean kit) and $115.00 for labor. As I previously mentioned above, I didn't have to turn or replace the rotors. The work was done by Nalley Jaguar in Roswell, GA and they did a great job!

I have no problem using aftermarket parts that don't involve safety. But I think you're taking a chance using any aftermarket brake parts since they won't be identical to the OEM parts. Are the friction specs the same? Will the rotors rust after a few months? Where are those parts made -in China? What recourse do you have if you're not satisfied? Your installers won't warranty parts that they don't sell to you, and if you have a problem they'll blame your substandard parts. Your money, your decision.
I decided to have a Jaguar dealer replace my front pads (Alcon brakes - see above) with OEM parts and not have to worry. Just my $0.02.
