Thanks for the idea.
What made you pull yours off and will you keep it off?

When I looked under the bonnet of my '87 XJS, I couldn't see the engine. Too much strapped-on plumbing: fuel injection rails, emission-control pipes, etc., etc. The most packed engine bay I've ever seen.

My first ever weekend job was cleaning cars at a sports car dealer. I only took it because of the exotic cars they sold and I will never forget the first time I saw an XJ-S.
With steam cleaning lance in one hand I opened the bonnet of the XJ-S to clean under it and after admiring the view just closed it again as there didn't appear to be room to place anything larger than a packet of cigarettes and too many expensive looking components to risk steam cleaning.
The next time I saw that XJ-S the front was badly damaged where a tractor had run over the front of it

I guess it does look better without the engine cover. But again you can always powder coat your engine cover to make it look nicer as I did with my Vette engine covers (red) and intake manifold (silver). On my SL65, I prefer the engine cover as it's carbon fiber.
Here's my X150 4.2L without engine cover (post 17): https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-covers-57989/

I removed my engine cover today (2009 XKR 4.2L) and was the same as photos above from CCFulton. It was interesting to see. Lots of aluminum under the cover with the 2 superchargers nicely logoed and the V8 logo raised on the engine.
I do perfer the engine cover, and upon removing the cover the engine was super clean.
I will keep mine on, as the way it came out of the factory. I see no reason to remove these covers.

Duh, richzak, these cars (4.2L) have 2 (TWO?) superchargers? How about the 2010? Any links to engine info? When I used to consider buying a 2002 XJR (308) that was 4L I seem to recall reading about only 1 supercharger. When was it changed to 2? There used to be lots of nice links on the design of the 4.0L. Would be nice to read about the 5.0L too.

He means that there are two intercoolers. The one supercharger is buried in the middle under the outlet with the V8 label. The air comes up, through the middle, and is routed through the two air to water intercoolers, and then back down the outside of the supercharger into the heads.
In the x100 there were no covers, so the engine was visible every time you open the bonnet, which is probably the reason for the supercharged text and V8 piece and all that.
The 4.2L AJ34 engine stayed the same when it was carried over to the x150, but they put the covers over it.
The 5.0L AJ133 is different entirely, and always had covers so they seem not to have tried as hard to make it pretty. The best picture I could find was actually on ebay. All that aluminum on top could be polished to make a very pretty thing, boy that would be a lot of work.
When I was researching how to polish aluminum I ran across this polished up V12. Now that is one pretty engine bay.
