Driving Hard ! - preventive maintenance and optimization
Hey hello Jaguar's Tamers !
My XKR Portfolio reaches 62'000km (38500 miles) I would like to do a great service and maintenance.
I ride hard in mountain passes and sometimes in track I treat it like a GT3 ... and I guess it's not studying to resist like the GT3. Can you tell me the weak points to check? Handling to do ? Chassis/Frame check ? Do you have experience on better spark plugs or engine oil for very solicited vehicles? Should you change some seal (valve cover for example or other?)
So also the transmission have light glonk during the recovery of smooth gas (as on my old XKR 4.0L) there is a way to remedy it ?

Considering your hard use, half your fluids service interval. Personally, I change engine oil every 10 hours of track use plus new engine oil before winter storage regardless of use. Also don't neglect transmission fluid, brake fluid and differential fluid changes. Fresh fluid = works while pushed hard; old fluid = parts damage while pushed hard.
If you enjoy slalom, consider installing baffles in the oil pan. Continuous hard cornering can result in your oil pump sucking in air.

Brake fluid flush with something like Motul RBF 660, pads and rotors can wear down to just about nothing since they should be all replaced at the same time for track use. Tires also heat cycle and lose their effectiveness after a few track sessions regardless of tread depth. Monitor tire pressures and check alignment and suspension parts for wear/bushing play. Make sure your thermostat is operating correctly and check coolant hoses and expansion tank for age. I went 2 steps colder on spark plugs but I live in a very warm climate.

Get the suspension checked for worn bushes - track work and other hard cornering puts a lot of stress on the suspension, and these are heavy cars.
Also, for track days, get an OBDII reader of some sort that can show you the engine temperature (and possibly other parameters) in real time, and secure it somewhere that you can check it while driving. You could use a dedicated reader or a Bluetooth one with an app on your phone. But do make sure that whatever you use is locked in place and doesn't start flying around inside the car!
