Default engine light / sputtering

Hello Everyone;
I was driving home yesterday in traffic and accelerated slowly and the engine kind of sputtered then accelerated. I did not think anything about it until I got home an noticed that the engine light was on. I let then engine cool and checked the oil and it was OK. I did not see any fluid leaks. Any ideas? Can I drive it to my mechanic to have it checked out or do I need to tow it to the mechanic?

What happens to then engine if it heats up?

Thanks

Joe

Some.questions

1) How long in your ownership?
2) when last serviced
3) Year and mileage
4) When last refueled

Help us to help you 😀

When an engine warms up it becomes more efficient.

I have owned it less than a year. Service a couple of months ago. 2013 xkr 40K miles. Last refueled couple of days ago.

I'd read the fault codes first, you can get a cheap code reader on ebay that'll suffice.

The sputtering could indicate a bad fuel injector which when it happened to my car (twice) was not driveable and poured tons of white, fuel smelling smoke out of the tailpipes, along with the CEL. I'd tow it to be on the safe side and read the codes as suggested.

Ok everyone. I went a got a cheap code reader at HF. The error code is P0101. Probably the MAF sensor. Do I clean these or just replace them. It does not look like a easy job. Getting to the sensors is the problem. It is easy to change the sensor but not easy to get to it. Any help.

Not sure about the 5.0, but on the 4.2, I'd be looking at the gasket on top of the throttle body. If that thing is cracked, seated wrong, or otherwise leaking, it will act like it has a problem with the MAF sensor. I went through this when I reassembled after the valley hose replacement. Seems like you have to disassemble it that far to access the MAF anyway.

The air intake tube can tear to pieces, especially if an engine mount broke.

I just had the SC coupler replaced by my shop. I did not have any MAF sensor problems before. They could have not fully connected a vacuum hose correctly. We will see.

Thanks

Took it to my Jag mechanic and it was the MAF sensors. Went ahead and replaced both sensors and air filters. I changed the brake fluid too. Now for some questions: I have 42K miles on my 2013 xkr.

1. When should you change spark plugs?
2. When should you change transmission fluid?

Thanks

Spark plugs are supposed to be good for 100k miles. Transmission fluid around 60-70k miles.

I drove the car home from the mechanic shop and parked it for a week. Then engine light was off. The first time I fired the engine up again, the engine light came on again. Read the code P0101. Mass air flow sensors or whatever. So I drove the car several times during the week with the engine light on. I parked the car again for several more days. When I fired up the engine again, the light was off. Never ending engine light saga.

Joe,

Codes are set when a sensor reading is out-of-range. This can be due to an actual component fault (as would appear originally to have been the case with your MAF sensor) or frequently because the vehicle battery is partially discharged. Do you keep the vehicle on a battery tender when parked up for a week or more?
