Added to XK/XKR - 'How To' / DIY Repair & Maintenance 'sticky' in Section 5 Engine.

As You Tube videos frequently disappear or are moved, I've also taken a copy.

I've seen similar stripdown videos of the 5.0 engine before so what really surprised me was when at he says "These engines have never had timing chain problems" about five minutes into the video. I thought that everyone knew that the early 5.0 timing chain setup on these engines is a disaster waiting to happen. Very strange. 😮

A few months ago when I had all my coolant lines replaced I specifically asked for all the chains to be inspected. The Jag Specialist guy said mine were perfectly fine. Good to know at 70k miles.

That was fun to watch and full confirmation that those days are long in my rear view mirror.

It obviously doesn't affect every car but if you ask almost anyone who works with Jaguars what the biggest weakness is on the 5.0 they will say it's the cam chain tensioner design. I wouldn't expect every mechanic to know this but it is strange that the guy in the video says the exact opposite.

Indeed, that was my first thought but other comments he made suggest that it was not.

On the 4.2, are the head bolts also under the camshaft bearings? So the top end must be fully disassembled to pull the heads? Jesus, what the hell were they thinking? So a head gasket becomes a royal PITA?

It sounds a bit counter-intuitive but, in practice, whenever I've pulled the heads I've always removed the camshafts etc first even when the head bolts are accessible.

You might enjoy this one. 10 cyl Viper engine grenaded. Amazing what gets torn apart...

The V10 push rod motor looks so basic, I wonder what was the root cause of the engine blowing up like that!!

I thought it pretty wild that the Viper engine technology doesn't look much different from the '65 289 V8 my dad and I rebuilt when I was in high school.

As for the grenading of the engine, I think the sludge of oil left in the pan and the leaf he found in the oil intake is a pretty good indication of maintenance issues. I'm guessing the owner was playing near the redline without enough engine oil and the piston seized.

John Henessey started his car biz a few blocks from my old restoration shop in Houston
One day I stopped by and they were rebuilding (blue printing) a brand new Viper motor for a Dodge Executive. Hennessy said that the tolerances were all the over the place. Tight here...loose there. Older stock motors (usa) were not known for reliable high rpm running, times have changed

I was surprised by just how good the the inside of the 5.0 looked.
