What's deceitful about removing your original Jaguar sticker and and putting it on an identical rebuilt OEM Jaguar alternator that's the same part number? What are you misrepresenting?
And what's wrong with any of the advice I gave you? Why didn't you reply to my Post #4? That appeared to be a good solution.
I simply don't understand why it's so hard to decide. The decision is easy, as there are 4 choices: New OEM, new aftermarket, rebuilt exchange, or rebuild your original alternator. A simple cost-benefit analysis.
Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but I replied promptly to your request with good, detailed advice and didn't get the courtesy of a reply from you. Think about it.
On second thought, that's ... uh, procrastination.

Been a subscriber to FCP Euro for a while now and they cater to the EDM. They carry Bosch units for the Jag. I have been meaning to try them and their lifetime warranty for everything they sell would be quite attractive. Free 1 day shipping as well. Question remains, new Bosch unit vs. rebuilt original unit.

OK, just to clear the air. The title is ethics as related to Jaguar owners and if using an aftermarket part is ethical amoung Jag owners.
The original thread motivation was not help in finding a good deal or to make an immediate decision on purchase.
Never said I wanted to maintain originality, more I was looking for feedback on if maintinaing originality or going aftermarket was ethical among Jaguar faithful.
So stick to the topic.
I'll take the sticker comment as a misunderstanding, so far as the Massachusetts procrastination comment, well that is a personal attack. I can certainly be "civil" and the last thing I want to to start a war. It has happened before and, based on your location, you would not like the way it ends.
Enough of the distractions and back to topic. I was able to source a part locally. It is an original Denso and matches the original right down to the part number and Jaguar sticker. Not new but fully tested and in great condition. I plan to install (hopefully this weekend). This also means the original alternator can be kept as there is no need to return for core charge. So, I may take a crack at rebuilding it myself. I will need to educate myself a bit. Having an extra around would not be a bad idea. This also helps to reinforce the reason I bought the Jag in the first place, to learn and educate about a different type of car.

It is impossible to use only OEM Jaguar parts for everything, since a few have been discontinued and are no longer produced.
At some point you will need to use aftermarket or even get creative and build your own parts.
Trying to use nothing but Jaguar parts is a silly (and very expensive) endeavor. I can cite plenty of examples.

Agreed. I have noticed that there are many Ford parts (or parts sourced by Ford) for some of these as Jag was under Ford ownership. Some small items like clips, etc. Even battery and to a certain extent alternator is a relatively easy swap back if originality was the goal. I'm 1/2 way thru alternator swap, so I may be speaking too soon.

Ethics pertains to moral principles that guide a person's behavior. If one's behavior has the appearance of impropriety, then those circumstances warrant further investigation and possible action.
I don't understand how ethics applies to Jaguar owners, each of whom has his or her own tastes and values. Some owners will keep their cars completely original, but most owners will modify their cars in varying degrees to suit their tastes. There is nothing unethical about anything you may choose to do to your car, unless it violates the law or adversely affects others.
Misrepresentating your car is not only unethical, but may be fraudulent and criminal depending on the circumstances.
Under Federal law, the use of aftermarket parts is legal and, therefore, ethical. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 makes it illegal for companies to void a manufacturer's warranty or deny coverage under the warranty because of the use of an aftermarket or recycled part.

How ethics applies to Jaguar dealers is another matter entirely, and is beyond the scope of this thread.

I think post #6 answered it best then. As the plastic, rubber and electrics will fail
with age, keeping it 100% genuine and 100% functional
are likely a challenge.
In the end you have to decide if keeping it authentic matters to you personally as I reckon these are not likely to be collector cars as there is nothing historically significant about them.

if you resell your car, and you tell the next buyer "yes it's all original parts" when it isn't, that is you being unethical -- simple as -- whether or not they cram their face in the undercarriage to look for a denso alternator. but i don't accept that any ethical question exists as pertains to the repair/replacement in and of itself.

I will say this; I have bought from FCPEuro MANY times for BMW/VW and just a few times for Jaguar. I have yet to have a problem with them with anything.
