Default Faulty console switches

Hi everyone,

I have a 2010 34,000 mile XKR. I'm really, really pleased with the car but was wondering if other owners have the same problem as me ? The four switches around the centre console (Dynamic, ASL, DSC and Ice) are all
difficult to operate - they require some fiddling to turn on and illuminate. I've purchased a second console unit (Part No C2P20671) which appears new old stock, but that is exactly the same. Is this a common problem and does
anyone have a cure (doesn't look like the switches, individually, are removable ??). Thanks in advance.

I have only ever used dynamic of the 4 and it does take quite a firm push to engage. I figure because of there location that's to prevent unintentional operation, so see it as a positive feature

I suppose you could be right 'MarkyUK'. Like yourself I'll probably rarely use them either, I was just wondering if it's a common trait. Thank you for your feedback. Kind regards.

A previous owner probably spilt a coffee or coke on them

Possible I suppose, but having removed the unit from centre console, there's no evidence of that (the replacement one appears the same as well). Thank you for the suggestion 'Mufc'

Yeah with the "spilled something", as all my buttons operate flawlessly.

Just because 'no evidence' doesn't mean it didn't happen. Even a small water spill could cause corrosion on electrical contacts.
I'd say, take the buttons off, take 'em apart and clean/reassemble them.

Hi Cee Jay,

I get your point but I don't know if it's possible to remove the buttons - the unit (C2P20671) does not seem to be dismantleable (if that's a word - lol). Have you ever taken one to pieces ?

Not those specifically, but they were originally manufactured, so there has to be a way to take them apart. They didn't grow that way on a tree.
I've disassembled many, many things, including switches, that were never meant to be 'user serviceable' and repaired them to operating condition. You just have to reason it out.

Took my start stop button apart and my ASL button apart and cleaned them both as they were sticking.

You know you have to push and hold the Dynamic, Snow and DSC buttons to for a second to engage them?

To get the buttons apart the release tabs are underneath the metal clips, will make sense when you see them.

Am so glad you posted to dispel some of the unnecessary and incorrect ramblings of others on this thread.

Hello MarkyUK,

In defence of those so-called 'ramblings' by fellow members, they are only offering advice (sometimes from personal experience). The whole point of this forum, surely, is to do just that ?? One persons 'rambling' can be another
persons solution. With regards the buttons on the console, surely if they need to be held down for a second or two then the handbook should say so ? I've checked my buttons again and even holding them down doesn't always produce the required outcome. Thank you for your input. Kind regards.

It is shorter than a second but it is mentioned in the workshop manual:

True, but OP said his new/old stock replacement behaved in the same way, which indicated to me (perhaps I'm psychic?) that they were behaving that way as that was the way they were supposed to behave. I would have thought, given we all had the same info, that would been as obvious to everyone?

Hence my 'unnecessary ramblings' post

Maybe I'm thin-skinned but threads like this get me nerved up. CaptainQ was simply asking for help in understanding whether the behavior of the buttons was OEM-spec or a problem. And he was offered some good information. But some posts seem to tend toward sarcasm. It's sometimes hard to discern the intent behind a post - emoticons help but don't completely reveal the poster's intent.

If we had the knowledge of all the veteran members on this forum, we wouldn't have to ask questions here. The fact that we don't - and are asking for the wisdom of those more experienced - should be met with fair answers, not snark.

If I am wrong, please let me know. I strive to make my mistakes clearly so that I may be better corrected.

Holee shitballs, dude. Yes, you are wrong. WAY wrong. Well, at least with my comment of 'it was built, you can fix it'. Most people don't have the adeptness to take a switch apart and fix the very minor thing wrong with it, but it is actually quite easy. Everything was built. Nearly everything can be fixed.
So, yeah, maybe you should thicken up your skin a bit. I posted only to help.
