Default First drive Nashville to Vero Beach

Worked out the sales details over emails and phone with the dealer (Lexus of Cool Springs just outside of Nashville). I drove up in my black Mustang GT with 42000 miles on the odometer and drove back in a black 2010 XKR with 21,800 miles. Prior to signing on the dotted line, I had the local Jaguar dealer there do a PPI. Car checked out and the dealer knew the car. The service advisor printed out the service records for me (water pump replaced, woo hoo!). So the first drive the next day, my birthday was almost 800 miles to get home. The trip included rain, rush hours, accidents and some kind of hostage situation in Georgia that caused the police to shut down the highway for about 45 minutes. The car took it all in stride, no overheating, no error codes and a couple stretches where I could experience that awesome acceleration. What a great way to buy a car! And no games during the purchase. Numbers were agreed upon (including trade in price) prior to me arriving. No numbers changed and I was out of there in about an hour. Great dealership and Newt, the salesman, was terrific! Best birthday ever! Now if I can just figure out how to work attachments...

Congrats, now the fun starts! Just a word of advice, check your oil and coolant levels on a regular basis, at least once a week. Checking the oil is a pain, and I check both before I start the car first thing in the morning. The oil level before the car is started will show a little on the low side, but so long as you're in the range, you'll know it's filled. Otherwise, these cars are almost trouble free. Enjoy!

Why is checking the oil a pain?

A more interesting question is why would it show a little low.

Chav,

Driving to Florida on an XKR. Ain't it great!

Checking the oil daily? Only if you are a complete fanatic. Do it for the first few days of ownership to gain confidence or if you need the assurance. Thereafter, treat it like any other fine car, weekly or monthly as your conscience dictates.

I Have had any number of Jags over the years and not one of them required daily oil checks or used excessive oil. Have I just been lucky? Mind you, on an all day driving road trip, a morning fluid check is the rule.

It is a pain because without a dipstick you need to do it through the computer display. To get an accurate reading, the car is to have been started or driven, then turned off and allowed to have the oil drain back into the pan. Supposedly this is doable (according to the owner's manual) in 5-10 minutes, but I have never been able to get a reading in under 20-30 minutes. How often do you want to sit in your car waiting 30 minutes?
