Default First time XK buyer (potentially)

Hi there - I’ve never owned an XK but seriously considering a 2012 XK 5.0L V8 F 32V.

2 owners - all maintenance records shown as being done by dealership - now at 65k miles. Waterpump shown as being changed (previously owned by forum member)

Should I get the pre-purchase inspection done by a jaguar dealership or Jag specialist ?

Any common issues I should be thinking about?

thanks

Independents are usually less expensive. But more importantly use someone you trust and who will do a proper evaluation.
Sounds like a nice one.

Would anyone know of a trusted Jag shop in or near Palm Desert, California? i’d appreciate the info’. The dealership said it would be two weeks before they could do a PPI.

The car was owned previously by forum member, Carealtor.

Here's the Jaguar Certified Pre-Owned Checklist. You can ask any independent mechanic with late model Jaguar experience to use it to do a Pre-Purchase Inspection for you.

I wish I could remember who posted it and the exact quote to give proper credit, but somebody on here once posted in reference to pre-purchase inspections something like "The best money I ever spent on a Jaguar was the money I spent on the one I did not buy."

I’m assuming the advice is to make sure I get the PPI done and not that I shouldn’t buy one ?

Going to see it today and PPI Monday hopefully

if anyone knows forum member Carealtor can you ask him to msg me - he previously owned it.

asking price is $18950 - thoughts ?

Due for a transmission service, which JLR are unlikely to do. So worth mentioning, if they take it out of the cost.
Check coolant level. Should be normal, If not why? Leak.??
Check the tyres for tread depth remaining, or new boots soon.
How does it drive, and how does it sound.

If you don't know what to look for, get someone who does review it and give a report.

Check prices on line in you local area.

One would have thought Luxury cars and prices would be dropping by now, How much of a hurry are you to purchase.

It does look nice, as one would expect.

Ask if timing chains and tensioners have been replaced.

There is an independent in Carlsbad. Carlsbad British Motorcars. I didn’t use them yet, but he seemed very knowledgeable and helpful. And would do an independent check with 1 day notice.

So, what did you decide?

BTW…there’s one for sale in Aviara section of Carlsbad. Low mileage. I went to see it. Multiple issues, including a dead infotainment. The guy is asking a premium price and won’t negotiate…and is an *******. You have to look at some turds to find a gem, which I did.

I went and drove the car, felt fantastic, looked great, got the price down told him I’d need to get a PPI done - he called next morning to say it has been sold.

still looking for the right one.

A number of outfits frown upon hearing about a PPI. It’s just as well but makes it exceedingly more difficult to secure a used car.

Yep, the car may NOT have been sold, he just told you that because he already knew of existing problems that would have been found.

However, to be fair…. its a 14 year old car!!!
Assume it needs all the maintenance. If she starts, runs, drives, corners, brakes all without any major surprises (noise, smells, sounds, vibrations). and no codes…
Buy it. Then send it to the specialist shop on a flat bed, get the inspection done as they are changing every fluid, belt, filter, mediocre hose…

While this is going on, let the shop worry about getting her plated.
And even with surprises, in a week or 2 you’ve got your pristine set of wheels.

This process has never failed me.

Jeepers, in writing this I’m yearning for a spirited Sunday morning drive down to the place where other car geeks like to hang for the Sunday morning coffee…. and be back for the start of the Monaco GP!! See ya!

If there are maintenance records, I'd only do a body shop once over. Make sure it hasn't been in an undisclosed accident. Once on the lift, you/they can give it a once over for leaks the like.
