The chrome plating on my 07 XK "shift panel" has separated and created an extremely sharp edge where the lever is in Drive position. I've tried a couple things to fix this while retaining the chrome and haven't been successful. Fortunately, it looks like a replacement is only about $18.
Has anyone done the replacement? It's described in the shop manual at 76.47.26. I have two questions. First, how do you remove the floor console veneer trim panel? All it says is carefully release the 8 clips. I don't want to make an expensive mistake. Second, how do you remove the shift handle, which the procedure is silent on?
That was a real issue with my 08XK. I must have had my dealer replace three of those panels under warranty when I had the car. My guess from seeing this issue mentioned several times on the Forum is that it was an issue with the 07s - 09s.
If your 07 XK is the same as mine, you remove the shift handle by rotating the conal locking collar clockwise while holding the shift knob still, then the shift knob removes counter clockwise. The locking collar will then unscrew as well leaving you just a stick.
I used cloth under a set of grips. It was not held in by a lot of torque to require the proper pin wrench that would probably be used if done at a dealer.
The shift knob just unscrews. The wood veneer panel is firmly held by clips are the are release by a firm but gentle ( if that makes sense) upward pull. In order not to damage the veneer you really need to get between the console leather and the panel and underneath. The best tools for this are the plastic trim removal tools, easily available on eBay. The veneer panel removal should be started at the rear end. That is, toward the seats. It sounds more complicated than it is.

Where did you see the replacement for $18.00 and do you have a part number.
Are you talking about the chrome on the J-Gate?
As for removing the shift knob. Jaguar secures the shift knob with a "red" lock tight type adhesive and can be a bear to remove. I had to apply a hot iron on the metal shift knob to loosen the knob. I replaced the OEM 2009 knob with a Jaguar optionable knob that was available in the 2009 brochure.
Wishful thinking, but that one doesn't fit our cars. I think what you're looking for isn't available separately and is much more expensive since it's part of a larger assembly. If you find it, let me know; mine's a bit rough around the edges. Clearly, defective materials for the intended purpose - probably PVD "chrome", which isn't sufficiently durable as polished stainless steel would have been. Buying an exact replacement would be a waste of money because it wouldn't hold up any better than the original.
Just wondering if a custom metal fabricator could make a thin SS overlay and, if so, at what cost. Anyone know a source to contact?
Have the same issue, i.e. some sharp edges near the D position. Watching this thread! I did remove the trim as explained above, using the manual diagrams to locate where the eight clips are ... you do need to be careful and use plastic trim tools but it's fairly easily doable.

After you got that trim piece off, did the chrome surround for the shifter look like it was removable? I recall an old thread that said it was not and that the entire assembly had to be replaced. I hope I'm wrong and that surround is separately available.

If I recall correctly, yes, the shifter surround is removable from the trim. However, I'm not sure whether it's possible to obtain the surround separately. Very interested to know part number, source and price!
The diagram of the part on the Gaudin Jag web site sure looks like the right part. I haven't called them but take a look. It is described as a "shift panel" and is separate from the surrounding trim piece.
The OEM Jaguar part described as a "shift panel" differs depending on year and model. Per Gaudin Jaguar's website:
1. 2007 C2P8075 $17.50.
2. 2008 I didn't look this up.
3. 2009 w/o Portfolio C2P15643 $73.94.
4. 2009 with Portfolio C2P11641 $450.94. Not a typo. OUCH!
I wonder why there's such a huge price difference. Here's my 2009:
Maybe the 2009 Portfolio part comes only with the stainless steel surround. Do the others have a similar surround? Please post photos of the 2007 and non-Portfolio 2009.
I'll see if my local dealer's parts guy can get that 2007 part. Before I buy it, I'll see if the chrome shifter surround can be removed and refitted to my 2009 Portfolio shift panel.
At that price, I'm sure it's painted plastic. Note that it does not include the center section with the shifter surround, so there's no point to contact my dealer. Back to square 1.
Yikes, looks like this little chrome plastic piece is part of the assembly:
SHIFTER - 2007 Jaguar XK (C2P5184)
$700!!!
Thanks Jag.
jehart49,
That's exactly why I'd like to find a custom metal fabricator who can make a thin, polished stainless steel overlay. It makes no sense to spend a fortune for a little piece of trim.
A SS overlay would be easy to install and look exactly like the OEM part but would be much more durable. I think there would be a decent market for this custom part, provided it can be produced at a reasonable price. I suspect, but am not sure, that this J-Gate shifter surround design was used on all other Jaguar models prior to the change to the rotary shifter.
With 3D printed parts now being very affordable, hopefully a Forum member will know someone who can produce a 3D printed prototype of this part that can be used to mass produce it in stamped stainless steel.
