Cool front left wheel brake squeal

Hi,

I just bought a 2008 Jaguar XK 4.2... I took it for a long drive (200 miles) to get used to her, and towards the end there was a quite pronounced brake squeal from the front left wheel.

BUT... it was intermittent? Sometime there, sometimes not, but pretty much always @ lower speeds (below 40mph)

The brakes are performing well, and I was not pushing the car hard (just getting to know), but wow! quite the loud noise.

The day started out @ 68 degrees, and by the time i got back home it was 87 degrees.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers,

Ian - Jaguar xk 4.2 - Atlanta, GA, USA

All disk brakes squeal, it matters most what is done to reduce it to minimal.
Take the caliper off and grease (lightly) the back of the pads where they touch the pistons and caliper. Also grease (lightly) the pins and other contact surfaces.
Many brake pad manufacturers include a special paint/surface on the back of the pads to minimize squeal. Maybe yours wore off.

The front left (and the rear right) brakes each have a pad wear sensor. For some reason this harness connection makes these two calipers bind more readily and frequently than the two non-sensor calipers and hence the propensity to squeal.

Do as Cee Jay suggests.

I went through the same problem recently. My front brakes would squeal when under light braking but only after they had warmed up a bit. I applied some anti-squeal paste to the back of the pads, and the problem mostly went away. A few weeks later, I thoroughly cleaned the wheels and surrounding areas. I haven't had an issue since, which leads me to believe keeping your wheels clean may help a lot here.
