Default Front O.E. discs for my 2013 XKR 5.0L ( 510 )

Hello all.

Some hep and advice on front brakes please. I am in the U.K.

It would seem I have a warped front disc on my car ( 2013 XKR 5.0L ) Jaguar tell me there are no discs in the UK and are waiting for information from the suppliers as to when they may become available.

So, meanwhile, I've been looking on ebay and around, for Genuine Jaguar discs, BUT, I am confused ... to say the least !!

Listed on ebay are these :

EBC OE Front Brake Discs 380mm for Jaguar XKR 5.0 Supercharged 510 13-14 D1788 The ebay listing No. is 292443596730

So, my question is, Do EBC supply Jaguar ? Or should this say " O.E. Quality ".

I want to secure a genuine O.E. pair of front discs.

No, EBC is NOT an OE supplier. ATE, Teves, Brembo and some others are however. BUT I’d be surprised if you’ve a warped disc as it would take an extreme amount of heat to do so, as in more heat braking could ever generate and enough to do damage to other nearby bits in the suspension, about 1500 degrees Celsius. So, who performed that diagnosis? I’d get another opinion from a brake specialist as it’s more likely you’ve built up some pad material on the rotor surface which a good scuffing could help eliminate.

Thank you. That's very interesting.

I'm not convinced the front discs on the car at the moment are in fact O.E. Although I know the pads are. it has become SO bad this last week, and they were never quiet to start with. I diagnosed it myself. The usual sensations. back and forth movement on the steering, a pulsing feel when braking and lots of noise and vibration through the car.

Warped discs is a myth, unless you track your car. Brake discs usually don't warp; uneven pad residue bonded onto the rotors can cause the steering wheel to wobble and the brake pedal to pulsate when the brakes are applied. There are many other things that you should have a competent brake technician check before you replace the rotors.

It allows your wheels to shimmy, which is more pronounced when the brakes are engaged. I recently changed my front toe links, and it helped my braking shimmy considerably. You may still have a problem with the rotors, but it's easy to check those links, and they aren't that expensive.

Pompa , you will have pad transfer on your discs hence the vibrations through the steering wheel when braking , warp discs are a fallacy, a term mostly used by a incompetent mechanic . But if you really want to change them go to eurocarparts or carparts4less in the uk . Put in your car reg no . Padgid are OEM I used them on mine and come with a 2 year no quibble warranty

That's what I used to think also.
Before I married my fourth wife, she had a Dodge Caravan that drove like crap, plus the brakes were bad. The van wobbled horribly at low speeds. I did her a favor and did the front brakes for her. Got new pads, refreshed the brake fluid, brought the rotors to my buddy who has a shop for him to turn..... he said to me "Can't turn these, they are warped". Course I didn't believe him so he took me back to his brake lathe... Yep, one side was off a good eight of an inch, 180 degrees opposite touched the cutting tool. He spun it by hand, it had a noticeable wobble to the disk while the hub was perfectly straight.
Yes, rotors can warp. Dunno why on this case, being a Caravan. (not yet) Wife said it drove fine months earlier. Maybe she drove through a cold puddle when the rotors were red hot or something.
Anyway, I replaced both front rotors with new and her van drove (comparatively) perfect afterwards.

If me I would do the bedding in procedure before buying new discs . Take the car on a long country road one evening after the rush hour as you can not stop , drive car to 30mph then slowly brake down to 5mph do not stop , then build speed back up to 30 mph do this 3 -4 times without stopping then increase speed up to 60mph , the same again brake slowly and firmly down to 5mph . Do not at any point stop . Do this 5-6 times the shudder should be gone . Do on a long stretch without any cars behind you if possible better in an evening

Sounds like a vibration problem, not a rotor problem.
1- Run you finger across the surface of the rotor. It should be relatively smooth (not bumpy) as you progress radially outward.
2- As mentioned above, could be suspension components - you can grab your tierods and check if theres any play.

Both of those can be done with the car on the ground.

Hit any pot holes lately? Have your wheels road force balanced and see if that helps.

Thank you. this is all goving me food for thought. The " drumming " noise in the car is SO loud !! Would that fit in with this ?

I had terrible wobbling upon braking on the freeway on an aftermarket set of rotors that were just awful. I replaced them soon afterwards with a set of drilled and slotted rotors from R1 Concepts, and besides looking great and not rusting after a car wash, they are "smooth as silk." I've had them about 2 years and they remain better than my OEM ones ever were. They were also very reasonably priced, and their customer services was first rate.

Thank you. That's useful. All options are open to me now. First, I think I'll have the other possible causes explored : kinks, suspension, brake pad deposit etc.
