Question Fuel cap tether

I was just wondering (dangerous, I know) how the fuel filler cap is supposed to be attached to the car? It has a tether with a big hole on the end that doesn't attach to anything on my car. I thought it was supposed to go on the big hole on the fuel door but it seems the door release solenoid latch goes into that hole. My shop manual doesn't seem to address this. I just tie-wrapped to the hole anyway.

Golly gee! It was too dark to see that hole back in there. Probably a plastic $20 button at my dealer.

When I replaced the fuel filler bowl, I put the tether in the same place on the new one as it had been on the original which isn't the hole shown in Cee Jay's diagrams in post #2.

I'm now wondering if it's always been like that or if the PO/Dealer had refixed it at some time.

Nope, I'm pretty sure that is correct since it is tethered the same on my 12 too.

I'm not smart enough to get mine to hang on the door. Usually it's flopped up in the corner out of the way.

The XK tether is awkward. I prefer the magnetic filler caps they fitted to the X300:
