I got a engine shaped MIL on my dashboard the other day while driving along normally, and my OBD reader reported a confirmed P0087 and a pending P0088. Having read around the internet a bit, I figured replacing the fuel filter may be a good start, and probably due for a change anyway on my 2007 XK at 93k miles.
The good news: I bought a tool to get the fuel filter lines off, but there are quick release buttons on the in and out lines!
The not so good news: I got a replacement part from Advance Auto Parts, supposedly for my car, but check out the picture... completely different attachments! CARQUEST - Part Information
The question: is my "original" fuel filter the usual type? I'm wondering why the parts match could have got this wrong. Also, thoughts on changing the filter to combat a P0087? TIA! 07 XK fuel filter and the supposed replacement and box
I believe there was a change made to the 07 models where they switched to the quick connect ones. The quick connect it the correct one. NAPA sells them along with the housing.
If you can, use your scanner to check the fuel pressure while driving. If the values are jumping around from very high to low, it could be your fuel pressure regulator.
The FPR is listed a possible failure under both P0088 and P0087 codes. I had a failed FPR but it was leaking.
To round out the story, I returned the parts I got and purchased the one from NAPA (FIL 3595) which fit perfectly. Plus, since I'd already done it once, I didn't need to jack up the car to access the parts as I knew where everything went and is perfectly accessible with the car on the ground.
I took gkubrak's advice and had a look at the fuel pressure with the new fuel filter on and it was nice and steady, plus I couldn't feel the slight hiccuping I used to get. When I took the old fuel filter off and emptied the bit of gas in it, I blew through it lightly to get all the gas out and noticed some light brown fine residue in the gas that came out. That was overdue for a change!
