Default Gas cap removal problem

I have a 2012 XKR convertible that I just acquired from my son. 58,000 plus miles. The first time I went to get gas in the car I released the gas cover from the button inside the car. The door popped open no problem. When I went to turn the gas cap to remove it there was a problem. I just couldn't get the thing to pop out of the gas filler. I turned it clockwise until it clicked and then reverse counterclockwise all the way. It took five tries to get it out. I've been dealing with gas caps for 60 years and I've never had this happen. Any ideas out there? I appreciate any response.

Buy a new gas cap? Seems like the one on it has worn.

I expected finding this gas cap to be easy, but ...

Other than the price, what's the difference between these two gas caps?

JEPC lists two types of Fuel Filler Cap:

1. 1/4 turn (VIN range dependent)
2. Other option

I can't imagine what "Other Option" could be.

Other Option could be the non-quarter turn one, that keeps on ratcheting when it gets tight.

I'd assumed quarter turn referred to removal and not replacement.

It never pays to assume with Jaguar. All the ones I've had in recent years have ratcheted. I didn't know US was different.

The gas cap does not have a key to remove. It is like every other gas cap I've seen on cars here in the United States. Clockwise until it clicks. Counterclockwise it's supposed to just flip right out. Not happening with this car.

Maybe because it's broken? Get a new cap. New caps work.
The cap on my XKR rotates clockwise 90 degrees then ratchets. Removal, it free-spins a half-rotation (180 degrees) and then engages; a quarter-turn more and it's out.

Thanks for the information. At least now I have something to go on. If I still have a problem then you're probably right I will need a new gas cap.

I followed the advice of Cee Jay. Problem solved! Thanks so much for the information. That quarter turn was something I ever had no experience with. I've been driving Ford explorers for about 10 years and they don't have gas caps. Just open up the door on the gas filler, put the nozzle in get your gas. Take the nozzle out and close the door and you're done. A simple answer I know for the gas cap. But it sure helped me a lot. Thanks again.
